Thread: What if Slices Expired and needed to be re-sliced?

I don't know if this idea has been presented but I didn't find anything like it in the stickies so I hope it isn't a repeated idea but here goes.

Why can't slices expire? As smugglers, we install "Upgrade Kits" on weapons. Why can't these upgrade kits have conditions so that you have to get your Upgrade replaced when it wears out. It would create a recurring revenue stream for smugglers as well as give players a chance to get a better slice later. Or rather you could maintain the same slice but it has to have a new kit installed in it. Just like everything else that has a effectiveness lifespan slices should too. It is the only thing in the game that I know of that is permanent. Other services and stat increases are not permanent. Buffs wear off, food timers expire, and slices are permanent. What do you guys think about this as a well deserved change for smugglers....

If this idea has been discussed before I am sorry for bringing it up again but if you could point out where to me I would like to read it as I haven't been able to find it...

Hmm, interesting.

That could also be the experimented on quality for the tools meaning that the tools would affect how long a slice lasts, your skills would continue to determine the effectiveness of the slice.

That's a pretty good idea and no, i haven't heard it before.

I never thought about the experimentation aspect of it. But that could be something that could create a differentiation between smugglers. As it stands now any Master Smuggler will do for slicing...

sliced weapons have a low chance of getting a good repair. i think weapon decay itself is how smugglers get their return business.

I disagree.

Yes there is that chance we're going to f up a repair because we sliced it, but regardless I continuously find weapons that I want and need sliced, regardless what I already have.

I doubt that the fear of repair or the destruction caused by repair is why we get customers...

Its just too much like a power up to me. Nice idea though.

I would rather have it so the upgrade kits can be made by Smugglers instead of Armor/Weapon crafters using raw materials and smuggler tools to make. These kits then would produce at random a Speed/Damage or Effectiveness/Encumbrence result with a random bonus percentage (with some sort of benefit for using good materials and having high experimentation) and cannot be factory produced. Then Smugglers would be able to sell slices at specific percentages for specific types of slices. The drawback being that we have to sit there and crank out the kits untill we get the slices we want to sell. This would create a market much like the one Doc's have for buffs while still limiting mass production slicing.

I was thinking about this and an earlier post regarding slicing and an idea occurred to me.

With piloting now, you need data modules with programs to use for your flight computer. What if the same concept applied to slicing? When you slice you basically create a program module to bypass the weapons limits - if you're searched for contraband, you could pop the data module out, disguise it as your latest "store bought mp3 collection" or something, walk past the search, pop the cartridge back in and away you go.

Because each catridge would be created based on the guns serial number (or the gun would be needed in the module creation process) you're not going to have factory runs made of identical "uber slice modules" and 1 gun for it's life could only have 1 module, or maybe the gun could have another slice catridge, but at an unbearably high risk of total failure and destruction of the weapon.

Anyway, just throwing it out there.

Another interesting idea but i think what would happen is slicing would become the perview of the weaponsmiths. We have several on Tempest that make crates of weapons, so they would have identical serial numbers. Use that to make the schem of the 'slice upgrade' and you can create crates of that as well. Now slicing would be done by ws's only.

dont like the idea. Id prefer it if a "bad" slic or slicer would cause the item to prematurly expire. Then make experimentation on tools mean something
