hey guys im relatavly new to this game and was wondering if a pikeman/smuggler would be better than a pikeman/rifleman, especially if i enjoy brawling most of the time

I'd advise against mixing ranged with melee at all. Better to be super strong in one or the other... again just my opinion. I'd go Rifleman/smuggler if I were you, or if Pikeman is your thing, mix in some swordsman or TKA.

screw that! if you like pikes and you want to "smuggle" (/cough/cough) do it. Now, what you give up (probably) is the ability to take on some of the super critters and super npcs. But this game is not all about being able to solo everything and have an uber attack template. mix and match what you want.
