Hi, im not a smuggler, but i didnt know what board to put this on,

I think that the devs should make it to where you can PICK which slice you get, like for example, i have boughten several acklay bones, had stun batons made, and most got SPEED slices, i wanted damage =P, i think they should make it to where they get to choose what kind of slice they get, does anybody else feel this way?

There's talk about this with the upcoming Smuggler revamp.. but they haven't really said much more yet.

I tell them to dance around and shout what slice they don't want. Then I take a screenshot. I have a nice collection.

Lol, i only pray that the revamp makes you chose which slice, smugglers will get hella buisness then =P and be able to charge like, 300k for a damage slice on stuff like krayt weps and acklay weps =P, i would definatly pay 300k+ for a nice damage slice on my stun baton =/

Even if they relegate this ability to Master Smuggler, it would be nice.

Sure, people would go to Masters to the exclusion of all others... but honestly, don't they already?

And I'm sure that Masters could justifiably charge considerably more than they do already and people would pay.

I know as a Pistoleer/Rogue/Desperado I have NO need for a speed slice on any pistol, I want damage. To me, it's worth 20k or more for a 40% damage slice on my pistols.

I disagree. It would be okay if we could try for a specific slice, but it shouldn't be a guarantee.

Why not?

Every other profession gets to choose what stat they want to increase in their work. In what way is smuggler slicing really any different than crafting experimentation?

Someone who knows how to coax more performance out of a weapon or piece of armor is going to know what they need to do to improve one stat or the other - the only true variable is how much extra performance is gained.

Think about any of the things we modify in real life - computers or cars, for instance. You can increase the horsepower of the engine or various other things to improve power, or you can use specialized components to reduce weight and drag... you can overclock the PC so it runs faster (but hotter) and you can use cooling mods to reduce heat... the aspect you're improving isn't random, just the degree of benefit.

Heck, even firearms are modified. I can put a compensator or muzzle brake on a weapon and I know it is going to reduce recoil and improve accuracy. Adding a longer barrel not only improves accuracy, but also increases muzzle velocity and energy (more damage). Hotloading my ammunition will increase damage but surely won't improve accuracy instead.

As smugglers we have become accustomed to accepting luck and randomness in the slicing process so we now use that to justify resistance to change. Simply put, it doesn't make sense.

Let's not even talk about the utter absurdity of slicing stone knives and wooden staves... at least by the current "cut the wire" explanation.

I think of slicing as being a lot like overclocking a chip. You're overriding safeguards which put limitations on performance and trying to realize the hidden potential. The deal is that you can't tell what the potential is. Sometimes you can't get your cpu to run at 14x, and it has nothing to do with your skill. Since we're guaranteed an increase, I think randomizing the attribute to be increased is fair.

There are actually 2 things you can overclock on a chip: the bus speed and the multiplier. Sometimes you can get both to increase, sometimes you only get one. Sometimes you just get no increase.

We're guaranteed an increase when slicing (minimum of 11% for armor effect, 15% for everything else). That's a pretty good minimum improvement with no risk in my book.

Ideally, I'd really like to see a system where you can slice the same item multiple times, with a cumulative chance to destroy the item. Also, the range of "improvement" should extend into the negative percentage to reflect the chance to really screw something up. Something like the following:

1st slice: 5 to 20%
2nd slice: 0 to 15%
3rd slice: -5 to 10%
and so on

Under circumstances like these, I can see allowing the smuggler to choose the attribute to slice. I just don't agree with allowing anybody to choose what attribute gets a guaranteed increase of 15-35%.
