I got this idea after reading Greevo's "vision" thread. I also took some ideas from another thread which went more in-depth on NPC thugs for smuggler pets, such as Chunkers, Meatlumps, and other seedy NPCs, however I was not able to find it again. So I would like to give credit to the author of that thread as well. Basically the idea is: Smugglers as a perk for going up the (almost completely useless)"underwold tree" get a ability to "hire" these thugs for either faction from the gang(possibly hard to impliment) and/or in exchange for credits(easier I think to work into the game than actual faction "selling" for the non-GCW NPCs). The relative power of the thug a smuggler is able to hire being dependent on their skill in the "underworld" tree. These thugs would work the same way creature pets, faction pets, and droids work in game. Once killed in game, the pet would not be "rez"-able and require a completely new purchase of a thug to be replaced. Also the smuggler may only have one of these thugs out at any time. I think this would be great for immersion. How many organized criminals dont have some "muscle" to help protect them? I also dont belive that this would take too much "new" code for the game. The idea below is something that probably WOULD take massive ammounts of new code. So it would most likely have to wait for the "Smuggler Revamp" which is who knows when.
Legendary Thug/Legendary Sidekick
Why was Han Solo such a great smuggler? Why was Han so hard to kill? I would venture to say that the fact he was part of a "team" helped him a great deal. Specifically his best friend and co-pilot Chewbacca. While Han was the "brains" of the team, Chewie was definately the muscle(not that Chewie was dumb, but honestly his taking of that conspicuosly placed dead animal on Endor was'nt to bright). Let us smugglers quest for some extra muscle to help even out our poor combat skills. A pet that is stronger than a normal thug, but not overpowering. Say, not as strong as a kimogilia or rancor, but definately something to be reckoned with. We could get these pets as a reward for completion of a NPC assigned quest(smuggler theme park). You could only get these quest with completion of the Master smuggler skill box(which is lacking of bonuses/skills). The type of pet we would get could be determined by the NPC we choose to start the quest with. I think it would be great if these special thugs could be rare alien species, Examples would be:
Sullustan, Duros, Ishi Tib, Gamorrean, Weequay, Dug, Gran, Aqualish, Chiss, and Noghri.(I purposely leave out wookies becuase it is a PC playable race, and to include them might provide confusion)
Although if it's too much work for the art department, I dont think anyone would be too bummed out if resources already in game were used.
Heck if you(the devs) really wanted to make it a full blown feature of the game you could make these characters special NPC equipable weapons and buff packs. Although I think these NPC should only be a novice level skill elite proffesion with these weapons to ensure balance. And the weapons would be special NPC only items.

How about creating an "Underworld Faction", and offering pets from there? Its been suggested many times. Its not a GCW faction...you can be an Underworlder AND an Imperial/Rebel. If you add to this planetary "factions", where you can make yourself a citizen of Naboo, serve in the NSF, etc, that would give a huge boost to the game.
Underworld would cover Smugglers, Bounty Hunters, and perhaps a Pirate-type person in JTL. Its for the neutrals predominantly, but offers scope. There could be some indication of fellow underworlders on your radar. Player bounties could be brought back in via this Faction. Faction pets. Faction NPCs. All sorts.
You could be a "Known Criminal" (aka. Overt), and attackable by all law-abiding citizens (aka the "Naboo" Faction, or the "Corellia" Faction, etc). You'd be able to get missions that specifically countered the legal world, hitting CorSec facilities, Imperial convoys, undefended Rebel convoys, etc. Actual pirate missions, as it were.
You could have Mercenary missions. Others (Rebels of Imperials) could post up recruiting drives for underworlders on a mission. They say who they want, and how much they'll pay. The Underworlder agrees to help. If they do the job, they get paid. If they don't, they won't. If they do the job, but don't get paid, the Underworld faction can enemy said individual, or place a player bounty, or something.
Your contacts with Nym could perhaps help you get your hands on a Destroyer Droid pet, or perhaps one of the other former TF droids. You could get your sidekick, for Smugglers, Bounty Hunters, Mercenaries, and Pirates. Your sidekick could become many in JTL, where they become your wingmen in other fighters. If you chose a planet to be aligned to, and chose Underworld, rather than Law Enformenent, you could get the local "Thug" on your side. They'd help you out if enemies were taking pot shots at you. If you were a Tatooinian Underworlder, you'd work for Jabba...thats more or less inescapable. Each planet could offer a special ship that was just theirs. Naboo has the N1 Starfighter. Corellia could have the HLAF-500 (or whatever its called). Tatooine could have the Cloakshape. Or, you might do an Underworld quest to get your hands on the schematics for an "Ugly". All sorts of possibilities.
Underworld missions could be anthing, from Smuggling to Assassinations, Intelligence Gathering, and so forth. A Smuggler might go to a black market vendor, and buy illegal goods, to be sold off elsewhere...they'd buy the items with Underworld FPs. Items would be really rare, spawn items, and would cost a lot...but it would create a black market that is in absense. Underworld missions could come from a person (rather, a terminal shaped like one), so they seem more underhand...they'd be in a seedy corner of every Cantina.
And, of course, Underworlders would have their own set of Faction Armour of some sort, as would the Naboo, Corellians, and Tatooinians. Perhaps it could be "painted stormtooper armour", availiable in any colour but white. Maybe it'd be patches of diffrent armour. Maybe it'd be Clone Trooper armour, found in some military surplus depot somewhere. With that, combined with the counter-Faction of the Law Enforcer, the game would develop an alternative to the GCW, but one that works in very much the same way.

Hm, my Trando smuggler would probably end up eating his 'pet' or getting a taxidermist to stuff him for posterity. I'd rather have a mouthy human sidekick to negotiate and woo women (trando women) for me. I suck at that part, they always run right when I'm getting to the punchline.
"And then, I ate him, because he asked for it! HAHAHAHAHA!"
"Where are you going?"

Speaking of 'pets' or hired people...does anyone know if the factional guys you hire use specials based on their profession??
I think it would be good to know what skills the person you are hiring has..thus you can choose something to complement your skills or fulfill the role that you need.
I also agree that they shouldn't be overpowered..like a kimogila...cause no one person is as powerful as a kimogila..they can kill one maybe solo, but they still aren't as powerful..(usually solo with ID, and warcrys, and poisons or something crazy like that)
But yeah, if you could hire peeps as a smuggler, and then know their skills, and possibly tell them what skills to focus on using in combat..it would add more depth into the game, which is sorely lacking.
-Eventhough there are like at least 400 things they can fix right now, w/o adding new stuff...this is a good idea. They need to bust out like all of these problems very very soon..then people will be a little happier :[
