So currently there is NO question that a Smuggler/Pistoleer is a nice template.
However thereare MANYquestionsas to whether Smuggler/TKM is a nice template.
I've been thinking about it and although I know nothing about how the coding works and therefore how possible it would be, I had an idea that has probably been posted hundreds of times but I figured I'd post it again and see how it stuck.
The concept is actually very simple,as Smugglers or Commandos go up one of their skill lines they would unlock blocks of Melee specials they could use at their base unarmed damage while they had a ranged weapon equipped.
So at say... Dirty Fighting I or Explosives I a character could use the ultra basic melee attack while wielding a ranged weapon (Melee Hit? Something like that)
At Dirty Fighting II or Explosives II a character could start using the most basic vanilla melee specials while wielding a ranged weapon.
At Dirty Fighting III or Explosives III you would regain access to the slightly more fancy specials that are in the Brawler Line, but not the ones from the elite melee profs. Essentially the four at IV within the brawler line and maybe Melee Assault for Smuggler/MBrawler or Commando/MBrawlers.
At Dirty Fighting IV or Explosives IV you would be able to use the Novice and low level specials from any Elite melee profs you have while using a ranged weapon.
AtMaster Smuggler or Master Commando OR Dirty Fighting IV AND Explosives IV you would be able to use ANY melee special while wielding any ranged weapon.
Furthermore, the way I would do it is make it so that using anything but a relatively light ranged weapon (Essentially pistols and maybe certain Carbs) this 'ability' would act as if it were one lower. So a TKM/Master Rifle/Smuggler 0040holding a T21 would only be able to use the Brawler specials but a TKM/Master Pistoleer/Smuggler 4040 holding a DE-10 (Why? Cause they're cooler looking.) would be able to use all but the highestspecials (The ones that typically appear in the second or third boxes in melee trees)
The damage done when using a melee special would be based not on the weapon you wereholding but rather on your unarmed damage which seems fair since both these profs require the unarmed line.
I don't think this would be particularly unbalancing since you very likely won't have the Speed/Accuracy that other more concentrated folks are going to have.
This could easily be a coding nightmare... I have no idea. But it makes perfect sense to me that particularly Smuggler's and Commando's would be able to let their weapon fall to the side for long enough to kick an opponent to the ground.
A pipe dream I'm sure, but at some point SWG in general must have seemed like a pipe dream too.
Any feedback is welcome... congrats, constructive criticism, hard core flames, flippant remarks, incomprehensible raving... whatever floats your boat.
