Thread: Will we lose slicing with the CU?
A. Change slicing at the same time
B. Nerf slicing until the revamp
C. Don't do anything and let us continue to slice weapons in meaningless ways or be unable to affect the new attributes like critical strike and whatnot, which is essentially option B.
I came to this conclusion based on the changes to weapons they've been discussing. Correct me if I'm wrong, but if the stats of weapons are going to change, slicing which affects those stats must change as well. Slicing unchanged won't do anything. So either they roll out the new slicing game at the same time or we lose the ability to slice until the revamp.
I hope I'm wrong, but since they keep telling us our revamp is still in concept and the CU will come first, it appears they might nerf slicing. I mean let's face it the DEVs have always taken the easy way out (autopulling clamp/knives/UKs), and they have said over and over again, our revamp comes after the CU, which leads me to believe that in the period between the CU and our Revamp slicing will be useless, probably like getting encumbrance slices on PSGs.
More detail on my question:
From the In Concept Slicing Document:
Weapon Customization
The category of effects the smuggler can apply will be dependent on the type of item modified. A weapon could have its firing speed decreased and its damage output increased. Within each category of effects are a series of increasingly effective modifications:
Select Customization: DL-44 (Weapon)
* Increase Firing Rate
* Enhance Weapon Damage
* Increase Critical Strike Chance
***so will we only be able to increase the first two in the time between CU and the Revamp, assuming our current ability to affect speed and dam remain effective?
[Most intriguing issue to me]
From the In Concept Document...
Weapon Failure
As a weapon’s customization level increases, it’s propensity for failure also increases. There are two types of failure: out of tune and broken.
* Out of Tune is a temporary decrease in a weapon’s function. This is not the same as hit point decay and it will not cause the item to become deleted. The higher the level of customization on a weapon, the more out of tune the weapon will become per use. The effects of this state will depend on the item. A weapon will do less damage. Armor will absorb less damage. A weapon may be retuned by any smuggler.
* Broken items cannot be used. A weapon that is out of tune has a chance to break. Broken items cannot be used until a smuggler repairs them.
****Ok, the CU will introduce weapons falling out of tune or being broken, which will be something we can fix, when the revamp comes...but does this mean that in the time period between the CU and the revamp, any weapon that goes out of tune or is broken will remain that way until we get the ability?
I think this is not only going to be funny, but will put a bit of a damper on the CU when people start getting their weapons out of tune and can't get them fixed.
I don't want to belabor the point, but it seems to me there are a lot of things involved with the CU smugglers will be responsible for doing, which is good, but if these things are implemented with the CU and our abilities to counter these things won't come until the revamp, won't there be a gap where not only won't we be able to alter and fix weapons, but our existing abilities will be moot.

Guess he's not listening or has better things to do or maybe it's my annoying personality.
Sure would like some kind of info on this, guess I'll have to find help somewhere else...

He's one of them thar four-runners. He usually is around in the late evening since his timezone is different then us in North America.
On the slicing note, I'm pretty sure it is a given that slicing wil be changing in the CU. In fact I'm pretty sure it has been said by TH or Tyrant that slicing, spices, and our DF tree are all within the scope ofthe CU and must be addressed in order to have full implementation.
I don't know how it is going to change exactly for the CU specifically, but I wouldn't doubt it if what we see in the In Concept is what they have already started to code. I know that Caylin copy/pasted and edited his response in that thread that he put in the c-forums previously. That either means that they had a preview of those docs, or the docs are specifically taken out of the overall CU docs. Either way slicing will be changed in the CU, and we won't have to wait for our "revamp" for slicing.
What you can see for yourself is this. The new slicing and smuggler experience docs were placed in the 'In Concept' section of the forum. Does this mean that it is still in a conceptual stage? No idea but I'd be very impressed if they went from conceptualization to full implementation in the time left before the revamp is to be released.
So with that in mind, I'm only expecting a partial implementation of the new system, with them piecing it together later. Covering only the basics of what needs to be included with the CU in order to get it out sooner while maintaining their new system of balance.. If that means four random categories instead of two at the CU while they work on the UI for later, well your guess is as good as mine.
If Wes has received some further insight that he can share, I'm sure he will.
I think Caylin is likely right, they will throw together something like we slice on four random stats instead of two, but I've never seen them implement such temporary, stop gap fixes with any level of success.
Don't get me wrong, I think the CU might be a great thing, it just kind of scares me that they are changing the things we slice before they change our slicing abilities...I would think it would make sense to implement such dependent things at the same time.

well, now that i just read about smugglers breaking weapons, i think i should take the risk and get my 485dmg Tenloss Rifle sliced now.......it may get speed sliced but at least you can't BREAK it!!
Catch me drunk and maybe I slice the wrong wire? ![]()
hehe Notice though that if it gets broken it can be fixed at least.... at current if something bad happens and you lag and cut the wrong wire (Never happened to me in close to2 yrs of slicing, but have seen horror stories of it happening to folks), the weapon cannot be sliced again. So that is one positive I guess ![]()
