Ok.

I have finally ground up a new toon from scratch last night and got all the way to being (nearly)a Novice Smuggler. (YAY FOR ME!)

Now I am looking to make this toon entirely combat oriented and I would never be any other profession other than a smuggler first. So I am trying to find ways to integrate smuggler into a full-out combat template.

I have read numerous threads in here about how well Rifleman compliments it - but I'd really like to be a BH (for reasons I'm sure we are all aware of) and I was wondering if there is anything else I should be dabbling in - and because I have never been a BH before, I am curious to know at what stange I can hunt Jedi (Novice, 4000, 0400, Master, etc...).

From what I gather, Master Smuggler, Master Rifleman, and BH 0400 (if thats possible) would be a good choice. I know it will all depend on what I want to get out of my experience, so I'll say that I just want to be the baddest PvP'in mofo on the block. The bloke all the little paddies run from. What changes should I make to my template that will give me an edge in PvP?

I wanted to post this in the BH forum - but all the threads I read there sounded like they were written by a 12 year old. With a few exceptions of course. So smuggler brethren, what will make me ALL POWERFUL! Muahahahahahahaha! Well, you know what I mean.

BH Investigation 3 gives you jedi missions....if you dont want to do rifle might I suggest carbineer? Has some very nice shots, good damage, decent range and combines well with smuggler specials. Plus you get battle armor which is a nice balanced armor. Avoid pistols...not enough range at all. And melee might work but you need icob from tk and armor break from swords to really do anything worthwhile and healing skills.

One is from a quest for a hunter in Bestine cantina, and the other one is for the first or second Dr. Kinesworthy quest in the Myyydril caverns. Don't have to kill Necrosis for either one of them.

Oh thank god. I heard bad stories about that guy. ( I think he wasn't breast-fed as a baby )

I'm a fairly new charecter but the template my buddy gave me works really well. I'm not completely done with it but so far I can really hold my own in PvP and PvE. When all said and done I will be master smuggler/Master Pistoleer and 4/4/0/0 Taris Kasi. I believe he called it triple threat, but it works and complements the short range of the pistol well. I have 2 roots, snare, intimidation, disarming shot and last ditch among others. With Meditation I can heal myself fairly well also. Like I said i'm pretty new but it seems to work pretty good for me. I think in the end it's all about how you want to play your toon. Never been a BH so I can'thelp on that. But with the smuggler vamp comming BH may not be the only people your hunting. Hopefully, us smugglers can get in on the action

If/when they fix AOE attacks ad elemental damage, commando would be a good compliment to smuggler. I'm master commando/4333 smuggler and I find it works nice. Haven't tried it in pvp much yet, but I want the above fixed before I do alot of that.

Well, if you want Smuggler and you want to be a Combat template, my personal suggestion would be to avoid Bounty Hunter. As is, Smuggler will have you pick up32 skill points in Brawler and then Bounty Hunter would require another32 in Scout. That is 64 points that are being wasted in non combat.

I would recommend that you Master Smuggler (per your goal) and then enhance that with Master Pistoleer. These two professions (by design) compliment each other every well. Pistoleer has some great specials (if they start working right) and that will come in handy with the changes to the "break on Damage" related to smuggler specials

  • Advanced Stopping Shot (root)

  • Advanced Disarming Shot (daze)

  • Area Attacks

  • Intimidation Shot

This leaves you with 54 points to dabble either Cabineer or Rifleman. I'll leave you with the preference:

Advantage of Rifleman

  • 4-0-0-4 will give you great damage and speed!

  • 4-0-0-4 will also give you goo General Ranged Accuracy skills

  • You get the extened range for full combat zome

Advantages of Carbineer

  • 0-4-4-0 will also give you some good general ranged accuracy

  • 0-4-4-0 will give you a KD, and based on TC feedback, the action cost fora KD recover is huge, so KD will be a great special!

  • 0-4-4-0 also gives you another snare and more crowd control skills

  • Cabineer has the DXR6, while a little weaker, it does have an extended range to 60m.

I think you will find that going with this template will give you better stats then the Smuggler / Bounty Hunter template you were thinking of.

If I were gunna go for a pvp smuggler....

m.smuggler
m.marksman
carbineer 0440
rifleman 0004
pistoleer 0004
n.commando

general ranged speed: 50
pistol speed: 25 (75)
rifle speed: 65 (115)
carbine speed: 30 (80)

general ranged accuracy: 175
pistol accuracy: 40 (215)
rifle accuracy: 60 (235)
carbine accuracy: 65 (240)

ranged defense: 165
melee defense: 150

Why this load out? Specials and power. You won't be CL80, but that doesn't matter for PvP like it does PvE. You get the best snare in the game, the best mez in the game, the best root in the game, the best ranged KD in the game, the best 'no zip' damage special in the game, the best ranged buff special in the game, and the ability to do these things in an area. You also have the ability to use all ranged weapons with a fair degree of proficency. A +25 general ranged speed wouldn't hurt though.

With pyro drink and advanced aim your general accuracy shoots up to 615. Enough to blow past defenses with ease. You can control the battle on on one just fine and when facing a group switch out to the launcher to land the states you need.

Another great PvP template is this:

Master Smuggler

Master Rifleman

Master Marksman

0030 Carbineer.

Nihi and Swen your examples are great detail - thanks a ton.

I'm definately going to reconsider the BH part of my template based on that information.

Thanks so much guys.
