MY 2 CENTS....
Orit Kelteel is a drugs dealer and weapons slicer. Hiding his little "operation" he uses his father's fishing shop as a disguise. And his father's wise words where...
Keep your friends close,... but your enemies closer.
So Orit decided to join the Galactic empire. Gaining the rank of colonel heis now untouchable, selling pixies and slicing weapons under the Empire's eye. Muahahaha
The Empire controls distribution of spices. Bypassing that control is where smuggling comes in. There's the illegality. Read the descriptions for the spices in the game. Only two mention complete banning in the Empire: Muon Gold and Scramjet. The rest are completely legal, if used in the proper context.
Codeine is a ready example of this in real life. Codeine is a narcotic derived from opium. In small doses, it is very useful to control coughing. You can get codeine on a lot of different medications, but the most common is Ibuprofen (tylenol) powdered with codeine. Morphine is much the same way. In fact, most codeiene is created from morphine rather than using the naturally occuring alkaloid. Cocaine also has medical uses, especially as a local anesthetic.
A spice by itself is not illegal. A spice obtained through illegal means is illegal.
Actually, I thought your argument with the "Imperials dont want thieves and lawbreakers." was solid. It still holds true.

nuff said, so dont come giving me intalectual arguments. I done said I win by default cause beein reb is hard you get searched by imps and they gots atst.. it is no fair for them to be able to smuggle too. cause smuggler in the movies only joined the rebels, no smugglers in movie joined the empire
Actually isn't it a helluva lot easier being imp? Especially high level. You can /flail away swearch parties.
Hmmmm...........*runs off to the Imperial recuiter*
As far as gameplay goes, Palpatine was a senator. An upstanding citizen of the empire. He also leads a double life just as many of us do. That's the way I think of it anyways.
/balances pie on her head
