That's where you're mistaken; I don't take this game seriously at all because I acknowledge that it's just a game. But, as Shagalot said, if you can't afford 10K, then you don't need to get your gear sliced.
If you really want your gear sliced then you can find a way to afford 10K, because it is chump-change. If you start a new character and you go master either Marksman or Brawler entirely by doing missions then you can earn over 100K, which easily covers all your weapons, clothing, and slicing needs. So the only excuses for not being able to afford 10k are laziness and trying to screw over the Smuggler.
I don't take this game very seriously, and I have a lot of fun playing, but I cease to have fun when somebody tries to rip me off. Nobody enjoys getting ripped off, even in a game, because it just makes you feel like a chump. Best solution? Don't let 'em rip you off, it's that simple.
Just because some of us are hard asses about our prices doesn't mean we take the game seriously or that we don't have fun. Personally, I work into a Roleplaying aspect ('cuz y'know, this IS a Roleplaying Game). Do I feel that a "real" Smuggler would hold onto somebody's gear until they paid up? I sure as Hell do, and that's what my character does.

While the resources don't matter, a Smuggler's time does, not only are they paying for our skill, but for our time.
For me, this is one of the major reasons I think 5k and up is an acceptable price, but this is because I'm willing to travel to customers. If I'm on Corellia and somebody on Tatooine wants a slice from me, then I'm on a the next shuttle to Tatooine. Not only am I taking my own time to go slice, but I'm also spending my money to get there. Many customers are willing to pay for your travel expenses in addition to the slice cost if you go to them, and it keeps customers coming back. But again, I'm taking my own time to go slice for this person, so I'm going to charge an amount that makes it actually worth it.
Its good that everyone takes pride in their work, but I think its getting to the point where people are becoming cut-throat and hard-nosed in this game, and it saddens me to see it. We supposedly log in to have a little fun and help people out (we are a service profession) but it looks like alot of you are just in it for the cash. Yes, I RP 'just in it for the cash', because thats the way smugglers should be, but we should remember why we are here... its for the community. If credits are that important to you, why are you a smuggler? (rhetorical question.. I know answers to this could spiral out of control
As far as demanding 10k for a slice... I remember when it was hard as hell to scrape together 3k for a slice after scraping together 6k for my shiny new dl44. It was alot of hard work. Now people are getting rooked by weaponsmiths, armorsmiths, and now smugglers because of the huge descrepancies in low-high income players.
Like I said, if someone's going out of their way to scam you or be a butthole, by all means, make their lives difficult, but for those that are just learning the game, and weren't entirely sure of what they were getting themselves into, I see no need to make their 1st or 2nd encounter with a smuggler, a negative one.

well I've had people not pay me.. Some ask that I just do it and they'll pay me back the rest later.. some do, some don't. Some offer me something to hold as collateral. I usually just go with it because its not worth my time to get upset about it. If someone rips you off, you're out like 500 credits in supplies max (per item). It really isn't that big of a deal. Besides it gives you a nice lil rp opportunity. Threaten them, send a bh friend after them to knock on their door, but to get that worked up about it seems wrong to me.
See, you're still not getting it. Nobody is getting worked up or upset over it. I don't have an RP opportunity AFTER somebody rips me off, because they never actually get to. I have an RP opportunity WHILE they're trying to rip me off, and enjoy that RP opportunity very much. I don't get upset or worked up over it, because in the end I don't get screwed over and I enjoy actually playing a scoundrel making sure he gets paid for his services. You seem to get the impression that all of us are yelling at our monitors because somebody is trying to cheat us, but we're not (at least I'm not anyway haha).

So.... if your character is a hard-nosed, cut-throat Smuggler.... then what's the problem with RP'ing a hard-nosed, cut-throat Smuggler? If my character's personality dictates that I keep the person's weapon until they pay up, then I'm going to keep the weapon until they pay up. Credits really aren't important to me as a player, because I could make more money by running missions, but I'd rather actually play a Smuggler as best as this game will let me. And if the Smuggler I play can form a balance between being a casual, charming Scoundrel and being a hard-nosed business man who expects people to stick to their end of the bargain, then what's the problem? The thing is, most of the people that give me problems STILL come back to me, so I can't exactly say that I've got a problem being in the community.

I say again, start a new character and go get Master Marksman entirely by doing missions. You'll make MORE than enough to buy weapons, clothing, a vehicle, and get your weapons sliced. You might evenhave enough to buy yourself some armor. Sorry, but it's just pure laziness that makes people unable to afford anything in this game. I've seen people sit in cities an BEG for credits for, quite literally, hours on end. How much are they begging for? 5-10k usually. They could have made twice that amount or more by doing missions in the amount of time they spent begging for it. Pure laziness is all it is.
If you have at least a level 4 Marksman or Brawler skill then you don't have much of an excuse for being poor. Entertainers, Medics, and unestablished Crafters have an excuse, but if you're a combatant and you're poor it is very easy to remedy you credit situation.
The most I've ever had in over a year of playing is 200k credits. I can spend that 200k in a single day if I wanted to, and I could earn it all back in a single day.I'm not currently a master of any combat professions, but I could easily make 200k doing missions in one day. Earning credits is easy, but if people aren't willing to put in the effort, how can you expect me to feel sympathy for them? Should I feel sympathy for the kid who failed out of High School because he was too lazy to do the work even though he had the intelligence to ace every class? Hell no, he willing dug his own grave, so now he can lie in it. If you don't like your situation, but you're unwilling to put in the effort to change it, then I can't feel sorry for you and I sure as Hell won't cut you a break. If somebody is poor and doesn't like it, then I'll direct 'em to the mission terminal where they can easily remedy the problem.
Like I said, if someone's going out of their way to scam you or be a butthole, by all means, make their lives difficult, but for those that are just learning the game, and weren't entirely sure of what they were getting themselves into, I see no need to make their 1st or 2nd encounter with a smuggler, a negative one.
Well, that's why you make sure they understand the cost. If they ask me to slice 3 weapons, then I'm going to say "I charge 5k per slice, so it's going to cost you 15k credits." If they agree to that, then how are they "[not] entirely sure of what they were getting themselves into?" I made the price clear, so unless they don't know that "k" means 1,000 then they knew exactly what they were getting into. In fact, if they DIDN'T know what "k" meant then they should have ASKED instead of just agreeing to something they didn't understand.
Have I made exceptions for people before? Yeah, I most definitely have, but if I make an exception for every schmuck that claims to not have the credits why should I even bother charging at all?

Not even then. Any class that can use a crafting tool can do artisan crafting missions and make 15-30k an hour without any risk. Pick up a pair of crafting missions from Mos Eisley to Anchorhead for 1300-ish credits each, you can do it about a dozen times an hour.
Artisans have it even better than that. If they can find some good concentrations of resources near the Eisley shuttleport they can get survey missions for the trip back and make even more money. It's quite possible that doing crafting runs will earn a character more money than a novice Marksman or Brawler can earn doing combat missions.
Again, anyone with a Generic Crafting Tool can do this - Not only Artisans but also Scouts, Medics... even Entertainers. It's how I got a lot of my income when I started out, the only excuse anyone has for not having whatever they want or need is that they haven't worked hard enough yet.
