Thread: Community Tone

Just a few observations:

1. Some people here haven't been around for many of the conversations already had here. So when they say it's already been discussed, or the idea is nothing new, the newer guys get offended. Because it's already been discussed and we're still waiting for something to be made of everything, the older guys are annoyed.

2. Some have taken disagreement to a whole new level. They think, even if you're constructively disagreeing or simply trying to explain something, you're flaming them or outright hate them. If you haven't been posting here as long as someone else, chances are they know more about the situation than you do. Don't take offense to it unless they're attacking you personally. If you disagree with them, so be it. People can disagree. With that said, the ones who have been around longer need to find some way to get ahold of some of the patience that SOE has burned up to now.

I was going to say something about the whole templater thing, but I don't want this thread to turn into something it shouldn't.

Right now there is simply too much anger going back and forth. You've got one group annoyed to all hell because of the devs and the noobs are finding themselves in the crossfire or you've got noobs who don't understand that their idea isn't crap it's just been on the boards for ages and they're getting pissed because they think the vets are dismissive of them simply because they're new.

Blame SOE folks. They're the ones who drove away a lot of the level headed and passionate vets, and they're the ones who have made this community so screwed up that we're attacking each other now.

"Jedi claims of being "broken" are like saying "But my TV isn't widescreen! It's broken! My TV can't show high-def pictures in 1080i, it can only do 720i! It's broken!" Meanwhile, crafters are saying "We'd really like to have a TV that's larger than 12" and gets more than 4 channels and doesn't constantly lose vertical control", and entertainers are saying "Can we get some color instead of this B&W piece of junk?" And smugglers? We're listening to radio programs of "The Shadow" and "The Abbot and Costello Comedy Hour" and hearing FDR's Fireside Chats. We don't even HAVE a damn TV, much less a broken one or a "broken" one by Jedi standards. I'd LOVE to be as "broken" as they are." - The Legendary Solo4114

I've got to say that I lurked on this board for a while before I even registered...didn't register, in fact, until I had a question I couldn't find the answer to. During that time, I read all the stickies, the history with devs, the conversations with GM, the idea threads, etc. And basically,as a newb, I got discouraged. I didn't post with ideas because they were all already posted, discussed to death, and obviously nothing had happened with them.

There just doesn't seem like a lot to discuss, idea wise. There seems to pretty much be a consensus over what should happen with the smuggler prof., but there also seems to be a really good chance that they won't ever be implemented. It's discouraging and kind of pointless to continue to rehash issues thathave already been discussed into the ground with no resolution (and with the very real probability, based on past actions, that there will be no resolution.)

I have posted a couple of times on in the In Concept thread, and will post more if the smuggler revamp reached the In Development thread. Until then, though, it all just seems like so much navel gazing.

That said, I actually really like this forum. Most of the conversations are interesting, and the flame wars generally seem to end with everyone enjoying beer and pie (and are a whole lot less serious in tone than the flame wars on other SWG forums).

See, the thing that really rubs me raw is that some of you insist that you are better than the rest of us just because you started before us. I have news for you, people come and go all the time in MMO's, so get used to older smugglers leaving. It happens, and it's going to continue happening. The sooner you embrace the newer smugglers, the sooner you will be able to relax a little. It's quite clear that whining and complaining, acting like two year olds isn't working. It's time to move on and try a different approach again IMO.

But I don't wanna.

Thanks for the post, Wes.

Personally, I've been spending more time in the Pilot forums than here, for a few reasons.

It's as much to do with the fact that until Smuggler is fixed, space is my only game focus, as the fact that this forum just hasn't felt the same in a while.

For whatever reason, things have changed here. We always used to be so unified in our passion and direction. We were the models of how to harmonise with the other professions. We never resented any other profession getting love, and we sympathised with their pain when they were nerfed.

More recently, the community has become fractured, and I think it's lost its way a little. As a result it hasn't seemed as welcoming, so I haven't posted here in a long time, and to be honest I haven't visited much either.

I really hope that as a community we can heed Wes' advice and pull together again. I know it's hard to stay upbeat when you're so consistently smacked down and ignored, and we all have our own ways of dealing with it.

We were and still should be the envy of the other communities. Let's show 'em what we're really made of

The thing that jumps immediately to mind when thinking about this is my own assimilation into this community. I started off with big wonder filled eyes; heck, I can remember I didn't even used to think "Why can't Smuggler's Smuggle?" until I read in one of the stickies that it was the community's main goal, at which point my brain fizzled and said, "Hang on.. good god, they're right, why the *bleep-bleep-bleep* can't we Smuggle?"

Anyway, back to what comes to mind ; what really comes to mind is that I was brought into the fold so to speak, as were many around that time and after. Everyone was cynically jovial with one another and seemed to get on like a house on fire (there were exceptions obviously, but that seemed the rule of thumb)... I wonder at what things would have been like if I'd have joined the community at this time/in this state and how I'd have fitted in.

That sound a lot like me. I stayed away from the SWG board from a long time and the only thing that got me posting again is the great Smuggler community. But not sure how I would have been accepted if I first posted a few weeks or days ago

You're right, we really can't make the developers do anything; but believe it or not, the community has some sway over them. Other factors may influence them more than the community (which seems to have been the case for quite some time), but our collective voice gets placed somewhere on the decision making scales.

Regardless though, I'm really talking about how we treat each other, rather than how we're collectively going to ensure Smuggling makes it in game.

Yup, I agree.

It is hard not to get into some profession envy. On one hand you are happy to see those changes to professions that deserve some fixes and content but it has been so freakin long with only some minor concessions.

the changes to slicing were mostly good though my old complaint of inventory room even with stacking is worse now with so many different loot parts.

the changes they made to faction buying were helpful but man they could made it so much better by not closing the radial after each or just allowing you to buy it in monetary amounts you specify, etc. etc.

I just hope we soon see a smuggler concept with smuggling and some sort of underworld ties(maybe some more/different skills for combat) hit test center.

Many of the old guard have just stopped posting (myself included) we are tired, tired of the lies or put offs or change in direction that SOE keeps coming up with because for one reason or another they can't or wont add smuggling or give us a true revamp. I don't know why they do what they do or why they feel it's ok to have 1/2 arsed professions in a game that should be way better then any other game out there. I don't know if it's LA or SOE or both, I don't know if this game will even survive. Sadly this game could have been and could still be the best on line universe out there but we lose more and more people everyday from the forums and the game. Communities and servers fall apart and people attack each other in the chaos. This community is a perfect example of this, it's not the same and for sure may never be the same......I don't post much here anymore because there is littleor no reason too. It makes me sad and my apologies as a former leader here for that but I like most don't have the heart anymore to fight a fight we cant win. If your still in game "hope forbut expect nothing" is how I feel now.

I've done the same, kinda. When a lot of the old vets left/ were banned, I had no real reason to post here much.

Same here. I think there's more work to be done in terms of getting smuggling into space, and I occasionally get old school in the c-forum, but with the bulk of our friends gone and no live progress toward smuggling made since.. well, whenever.. I don't feel like I have anything to say anymore.

You guys have my support, and I know most of the crusty cynics are there with you too (even if they're silent or voiceless for now), but I dunno. A certain clarity comes to your efforts after enough time spent without visible results.

Could always change at some point, but until then, good luck.

I agree the replies I get when I post reasonable questions usually are negative or basically pointless. I have posted here in the past and had some bad replies and after that I don't even bother coming in this part of the forums anymore. Recently I posted about fakin death and first couple post seem to help me out and I tell ya I was surprised lol. But then someone comes in and questions if I am using fakin death ability to avoid BH's cause I have a Jedi Character in my Sig ??? My point is this kind of stuff is not needed and does not help anyone with anything they are asking about. Tell ya the truth I probably won't even post in here again for a while cause of people that do this and when I do post the next time if it happens again then I will NEVER post in here again. I have 3 Characters and atm my Smuggler one is not in my Sig because I have not gotten around to change it. Not like I should have to prove anything but I am sure if anyone does a Search for my character Breon on Flurry Server you will see the connection with my other Characters in my Sig. Sorry I only post on these forums to ask questions or try to help out another player with the same professions as me, but I will not even bother if I am going to get flamed about it just cause I have a Jedi or someone is mad because Smuggler is not getting attention. I have a Smuggler too and I am all for more content for Smugglers and I too and hopping for a revamp. Sad that all those negative posts can't be something to be more productive to this profession and I hope things change for the better wether those players stay or not. I know what some will think that oh well this profession has been ignored for far too long and ur sick of it yada yada yada....

Well being negative and posting pointless remarks will get you no where.

Believe me this post is not only cause of just your reply. I have posted in here many times before and got much worse replies. But yet what you said was not needed and did not help my question at all. Sorry but I do not find what you said to be funny in this post...,

http://forums.station.sony.com/swg/board/message?board.id=smuggler&message.id=234504

In fact you can see in that post a few number or players gave good advice and I accually thought for once wow maybe this part of the forums is changing, but after you posted it proved that I was wrong. Again I only post here on these forums for information, advice , and to help others. So my question is why post something that doesn't help me or anyone else for that matter? Might be just me but it seemed like a flame towards me just cause I have a Jedi Character in my Sig.
