OK, I've lived all over the US at one point or another. And here's my advice.... Las Vegas.
The cost of living is low, unemployment is low, education system is good (in case you plan to have kids), and crime rate is very low for a city of its size. In addition, you can work just about any schedule your internal clock favours. There is always something to do and always good food available day or night. The weather is nice, if a bit hot in the summer.
Good luck, all things considered... I'd think about Australia as an alternative, given the US is moving away from that whole democracy thing right now.

More laid back then New England?!? You obviously have never lived in Maine! It doesn't get more relaxed and laid back then it does up here where the the US sees the sunrise first.
Sorry SpinningCloud, I don't mean to jump on ya,I just found that generalization completely wrong. Works great for Mass., butdefinitely not for Maine.
It's all good though, sounds like you guys gave him plenty to think about.

If you're looking to live in areas similar to what you're used to now, and you don't mind spending the big bucks for housing(. Boston, and New York are your cities (unless you live in cowboy country, decent nightlife in Boston, but it's not NYC, but both have a lot of different types culture), but if you're looking for something completely different, and think you can adapt to culture shock fairly fast there's Atlanta and evrything else along I-20. Cost of living down there is fairly inexpensive, and nightlife and culture arenon existant outside of metropolitan areas. Areas tend to be spread out a lot more in the south then in the north east. People opperate at their own pace which can be frustrating if you're impatient. Haven't lived in The Mid-West, or West Cost, so it doesn't fit in to my experience of the country thus far. It's a big country, and every region has it's own uniqueness both good and bad.

I like Oregon as well in some ways. No sales tax, few natural disasters and you can see a few trees before they are cut down by the loggers. Washington also has it's perks. I'm pretty fond of the NW in general. Cost of living isn't exactly low, but it isn't California either.
Down South you have the bible belt thing to work with aside from the occassional hurricane/tornado. Hot and humid in the summers and can get downright cold in the winter oddly enough depending onwhere you are. In the South I found the attitude is along the lines of 'Which church do you go to?' where in the NW most people are of the thought 'Wow, you go to a church? Aren't those filled with weirdos?'. Though I will willingly admit most of my experience living in the South was in Alabama. Take that as you will.
