Very odd indeed...
But...given the history of getting things fixed, do you really want to take your chances with the CSRs? You are a Smuggler, remember...

The software that displays in the forums here only accepts a small number of HTML tags (such as FONT, P, A, etc.)
I have noticed that excessive editing of the colors in a reply ends up with that "Illegal Tags" error. Usually the culprit is some ADDITIONAL HTML tags that get stuck in that you didn't put there -- usually the "BACKGROUNDCOLOR" attribute that gets stuck in sometimes. So if you think you did it right, but you get the "Illegal Tags" error, then choose "Edit as HTML", look for 'BackGroundColor' and take out all the values and HTML stuff you know you dont need. The Red text at the top of the error will tell you which tags it found that it didnt like, i think.

By George ... i think i've got it!
I am curious about some of the more elaborate sigs ... i tried to copy and pasted a couple, thinking i could adapt some of them but i was continually gettin errors for the HTML tags. Do we get additional HTML access on the forums based on our level? (veteran, elite etc) If no, how are they doing the boxes, glowy lettering etc?
