ive posted a few times over the last 6 months, but, my idea was we could hire goons (say 2 at master) much like rebels/imperials can buy faction pets now, who could be placed say in the gunner position in the YT-1300 as so we can fire all the ships weapons at once, whilst we are solo... (maybe they could enable imp/reb fp's to do the same on their MP ships)

Of course, the goons should be poorish shots, as so a player operated YT/other shipsguns would have an advantage.. Id also like to see us be able to hire goons on the ground - like faction pets again, but can help us in anything we choose (need wages like a vendor though).. A lot of people say this turns a smuggler into a creature handler, but i really think thats ridiculous! Smugglers always have associates, and think if we went into the cantina in mos eisley all this a couple of mugs in tow, it might actually begin to look like the scene in a new hope! Apoligies for going a little off topic - good thread.

Jaguaar; "You are a Rebel pilot, but also you fly the YTs from your family from time to time."

I was talking about Blacksun and Hutt fighter/bombers specifically.

Honestly if everyone was able to fly a 'civilian' YT with no weapons I could care less. But then we have the SoroSuub for that purpose so I don't know what the point would be.

And I quite agree that the Rebel and Imp navies wouldn't be wanting their on-duty pilots to be flying criminal faction ships. On the other hand the criminal factions would probably have collected a nice armada of Imp and Reb ships through piracy and blackmarket and I doubt for one instant would care what their mercenary pilots flew.

Point I was making is that it is ludicrous to suggest that all Imp and Reb pilots should have access to the entirePrivateer line of ships...on all levels; game balance to RL analogies to SW canon.

Smuggler, Smuggler, Smuggler Pie, Two years of "Soon"(TM), a harsh bunch of lies.
Ask me a riddle and I reply: "Smuggler, Smuggler, Smuggler Pie"

Smuggler, Smuggler, Smuggler Pie, Dancers can't smuggle and neither can I.
Ask me a riddle and I reply: "Smuggler, Smuggler, Smuggler Pie."

Smuggler, Smuggler, Smuggler Pie, Why are there Jedi, I don't know why.
Ask me a riddle and I reply: "Smuggler, Smuggler, Smuggler Pie."

Ok, the Hutt/BS Starfighters are not something that everyone would have access too. But piracy works both ways, and especially the Alliance is in constant need of material. So they have collected some squadrons of TIEs and whatever that captured carrier had on it (example is the Wraith/Ghost Squadron that used all kind of starfigthers in BlackOps). This is nothing that Player Characters should do though.

Anyway, the point that is troubling me more is the "no weapons on civillian ships". Space in Star Wars is dangerous, law enforcement can't be everywhere, so you need to have weapons on board of your ship to defend yourself.

And yes, the empire permits weapons on starships, maybe not up to military grade but enough to defend yourself long enough so that reinforcements arrive. I won't take anyone the abbility away to put in military grade weapons/shields or whatever into there ship, but they should be aware that they need proper licenses to have no problems if their ship get searched (deeply).

Aah... here i am talking and talking about something that just can't be under the current system... I would have designed the professions in space different... not just profession by factionalso by shipclass.

Imagine you would have an all-purpose-fighterprofession, a bomber profession, a freighter profession and interceptor profession. each one giving the special training needed for the general class. Then your space faction desides what kind of ships you can fly... a well dreams...

OK, just to clear a few things up...

The X Wing and Y Wing were NOT Rebel fighters. The X Wing was a manufactured craft that the Alliance purchased. The only onedesigned specifically for/by the Alliance was the B Wing.

As you delve into other games and books you open yourself up to a few more arguments. Civilians, criminals, and pirates certainly flew whatever they could get their hands on. Sometimes they even pieced together parts from both military lines to make a ship. The Rebels even used Imperial ships (the X Wing series of books) on occasion.

An idea like this lends to only one outcome if you want to be realistic or even fair, and that's to allow any player to fly any craft. That only eliminates the point of having certifications and skill trees for the pilot professions. Why don't we just elimate all certifications and turn things into an FPS.

The break down of certifications in the pilot professions has been done well. Everyone alreadyhas the option to fly the YT. It's a choice you make. It comes down to what's more important to you, the YT, an A Wing, or a TIE Fighter.

I'd love to be able to fly an X Wing, but the YT is more important to me. I made my choice and I live with it.

As for the GCW in space. There's a lot more that needs to be done in order to bring the GCW to space. Passing a profession's certifications out to others is certainly not the answer to that problem. It's bad enough they can have neutral NPC factions on the ground interacting with the GCW while preventing any interaction with neutral players. We don't need to carry that trend into space.

Until the GCW is made about the fight between the Alliance and the Empire, no amount of incentive to join a factionwill matter.

"Jedi claims of being "broken" are like saying "But my TV isn't widescreen! It's broken! My TV can't show high-def pictures in 1080i, it can only do 720i! It's broken!" Meanwhile, crafters are saying "We'd really like to have a TV that's larger than 12" and gets more than 4 channels and doesn't constantly lose vertical control", and entertainers are saying "Can we get some color instead of this B&W piece of junk?" And smugglers? We're listening to radio programs of "The Shadow" and "The Abbot and Costello Comedy Hour" and hearing FDR's Fireside Chats. We don't even HAVE a damn TV, much less a broken one or a "broken" one by Jedi standards. I'd LOVE to be as "broken" as they are." - The Legendary Solo4114

i agree with that - but i wouldnt like to see the TIE series available to rebels or neatrals - personally i thinkthat would ruin the game.

About the X- and Y-Wings: you're right about the Y-Wing, but the X-Wing was exclusively Rebel. It was built by a private company (Incom), but thedesign team that made itran off to the Rebellion andtook all the schematics and protoypes with them, so only the Alliance has them. The A-Wing was exclusively Rebel too. Still, I agree in principle - the Z-95, Y-Wing, and Nova Courier (according the Nova'sdescription on the SWG site) aren't only Rebel ships, but the current certification system is a fair compromise for the sake of gameplay.

If piloting were to be opened up more, maybe some system of temporary certifications could work? Allowing a player to fly a ship of a different pilot profession (as long as it's within their skill box limits, of course, no novice Imperial pilots with A-Wings) with some sort ofcost involved - maybe a smuggler would be needed to slice the security systems, which would only last temporarily until they reset? It would make sense within the SW context (Rebels or Imperials flying neutral (or enemy faction) ships for covert ops, neutrals using stolen factional ships), and there would be a built-in limitation, i.e. the 3-ship datapad limit would be even worse for anyone wanting to have one slot free for an outside-faction ship that they could only use temporarily.

On the other hand, I must admit that I'm at a loss to see much extra benefit to the game from such a system, when there are so many other things the Devs could be working on.

mrbleepbleep,

The only way to open up pilot a little more would be to limit it to novice or tier 1 ships, but people don't want those. The only other way would be to create more "wild card" ships like the firespray. Ones that are hard to come by, but anyone can fly. I pretty much expect that to be the case with the new ones being released with ROTW. I can't see them doing too much else.

Temporary certs would not work unfortunately. The certification systemis only a gateway. It's there so that you cannot use a deed with a chassis dealer unless you're cert'd for it. I've already seen problems on other boards where players couldn't reclaim their parts from an old ship once they changed professions.

I think the one compromise I could see happening is allowing anyone on a POB ship to access controls. This in itself is a huge problem in that you cannot have friends of a different profession assist you with your ship.

I'm just dead set against, always have been and I always will be, giving one professions abilities/perks to another.

Hey, what about certain missions in which you use another faction's ship? For example, a Rebel mission where you fly a pre-loaded out TIE for espianage. When you take the mission you launch in that ship, and when the player lands or is destroyed they are no longer in that ship. Not only is there a solid basis, story-wise, but it also opens up new types of missions and allows players to try out the other factions ships.
