What everyone is focusing on is the Smuggler Alliance part of that qoute which really isn't the important part there at all. We do missions often for Bib Fortuna/Lady Valarian/Black Sun and many more every day that are missions but not smuggling. The Smuggler Alliance could have to do asassian missions or patrols or guard "The Golden Durni" while it's in transit through space. The more serious part of this qoute is... "a Privateer is likely to run afoul of local authorities or even the Empire." This part of the qoute looks much more like criminal activity. This does not mean smuggling only but which could easy be grouped with such a comment. Nuetral pilot is being made into a rogue/merc/army-for-hire type of class. Now this to a part does make sense with there being such a focus on space combat and nuetral fighters but by putting such qoutes into the offical comments it turns off the nuetral folks because it simply makes them feel like they're something which they are not. The second part of the qoute that is off is the Empire portion. You best beleive the Rebellion has to deal with pirates, mercs, and other forces when they threaten their supply convoys and planets that show loyal behavior to the Rebels.

yer joking, right?
ok.. imp and Reb smuggling missions..
good idea. but here's how you make it more interesting....
anyone can smuggle, that's correct, as it seems in the current iteration of JTL.
here's my idea..
wanna run guns to the alliance on Yavin 4?
1st, be a Rebel (overt/covert, your call)
2nd, get cargo, head off into space (Cargo being like it is in any "take x item to Y person." this time, it's X amount of crates)
3rd, try and dodge impreb scans. 75% chance of being nailed
for imperials same thing.
you wanna make the run? HIRE A SMUGGLER!
Privateer class ship component
------------------------------
Hidden Cargo Compartment: these specialy constructed cargo holds give false image readings when scaned. Depending on lvl of smuggler, adds a certain % to being able to avoid scans.
Base concealment chance 30%
(this also means we need a revamp to the underworld tree.)
Underworld 1 = +5% against scan check
Underworld 2 = +10% against scan check
Underworld 3 = +10% against scan check
underworld 4 = +15% against scan check
Master Smuggler adds another 25% ot that number, for a total of 95% against scan check.
BUT..( you knew this was comeing ) the Cargo ALSO has a modifier to it as well, depending on it's class.
Class 1 contraband: certain organic items( like at customs, you can't bring certain foodstuffs over)and low end spice(shadow paw) have a +5% chance of being found.
cLass 2 contraband: mid-rande spice (sedative H2B, grey Gabaki) large amounts of weapons parts(fac crates of Adv. blaster barrels) have a 10% chance of being found.
CLass 3 Contraband: Fac crates of weapons,High end spice (muon, Pixie) and Armor ( we're talking factional armor here) have a 15% chance of being found.
now i know those look like low numbers.. but again, it's all cumulative ( it all stacks up)
hypothetical smuggler cargo
3 cases of class 1 = 15%
2 cases of class 2 = 20%
2 cases of class 3 = 30%
total = 65%
now it looks like i've painted myself into a corner... right?
wrong. now we go to the ships that are scanning you.. how good are their scanners? are they Imperial prototypes, able to tell you the exact molecular weight of the ship? or are they Scan-o-Matic 500's with the new lemon fresh scent? is the guy in the ship a hardened Vetran, who can spot a smuggler craft? or a new recuit, still fumbling with the manual.
depending on the level of pilot, and the class of scanners, you could be looking at either a 25, to 75% chance of having the cargo correctly I.D.'d.
now that's how you could do smuggler missions in JTL.
Secretly, he's tired of the Star Wars franchise because it's overshadowed all the other work he's done, like "THX 1138", and he wants to kill it.

As a colonel in the rebellion, a necessity to sell fp and a part of our current profession, i'm gonna be tres pissed if i have to drop colonel to do the smuggling that was promised (as Caylin points out) many many times.
