Thread: The concept of renaming players

Before the game was launched I was hoping that, down the line, there would be a way for people to put down aliases if they wanted them.

Maybe they allow two names that are tied to your character and can be switched like people switch profession titles. Unfortunately it'll never happen.

Would have been nice since a lot of the avatars you see in game don't differ that much from anyone else unless the person puts a lot of thought into character creation.

Please tell me what this griefing is all about. I have played the game for 4 months and have yet to be "griefed", at least not to my knowledge. I don't see how someone's name has any control over their actions.

Heh, quick and dirty examples, I could come up with better if I really sat down and put my evil mind to work:

1: Player JoeSchmo sees player NikolaTesla talking to a dancer in the cantina. As NikolaTesla is leaving the dancer says, "we should chat some more later, send me a tell ." NikolaTesla says "ok, see ya later," and then leaves the cantina. JoeSchmo types "/rename Niko1aTes1a" (note that those are one's not L's). He then sends a tell to the dancer being rude, crude, mean, vile, etc, etc, etc until she gets very upset. The dancer proceeds to type "/addignore NikolaTesla." Oops, look, she ignored YOU and not the jerk that was actually harassing her! She didn't notice the one's in place of the L's and mistook this person for you!

2: Player JoeSchmo sees NikolaTesla shouting "Doctor buffing +2439 for 10K! Lasts 3 hours!" JoeSchmo types "/rename Niko1aTes1a," removes his title, pulls out a droid and sits down near the Starport. A player comes up and says "I saw your shout, 10k for a buff?" JoeSchmo (as Niko1aTes1a) says, "yup," and upon receiving the 10k tip either logs out or just gets up and leaves. He could even try saying "Hmm I didn't get your tip, must be lag. Try sending it again, if a get it twice I'll re-imburse you," in hopes that the player is a real big sucker. Take a guess at how many angry emails and tells you'll be getting after that! The funny thing is, when you reply to the angry person with "I don't know what you're talking about, I didn't steal your money and I've never heard of you before" it just makes you look MORE guilty!

3: Player JoeSchmo types "/rename JohnQPublic," and then hides himself where nobody can actually see him (example: the building attached to the Med Center in Mos Eisley where two Imperials stand by the front door, almost nobody ever goes in there). He then starts shouting "JoeSchmo is a great Smuggler! He gave me a 40% speed slice on my weapon! He can predict slices and gives the best around without exploiting!." After doing this for a while he types "/rename JoeSchmo" (or whatever command would end the renaming) and just lets the inquiries roll in. Of course when he doesn't get the slice he promises he comes out with some B.S. excuse like all the morons do right now that make these kind of claims. Only difference is that now a "different" person is backing up his claim to fame, which makes him all the more dangerous to the unwitting.

He could also say that, for example, "JonnyDoeBoy" gives these great slices and do his slicing under that alias. Or, steal people's money and/or weapons while under that alias, and then switch back when to JoeSchmo when nobody is around to see that it's the same person.

The Bottom Line: Yes, all of these things could be accounted for an avoided through careful planning by the Devs, BUT that would take a lot of time and effort, which would definitely detract time, effort and resources from working on other areas of Smuggler. So yeah we would get a cool feature, but at what cost to the rest of the profession? Or at how long of a delay to the revamp getting published? So yeah it's possible to do, but in the end it just wouldn't be worth the massive trouble, especially for all the griefs that DIDN'T get thought of that they then have to go back and fix later on.

Whilethis would be a 'cool' ability to have, unless you roleplay, it would be yet another useless skill. There simply isno reason to change your name.

What do you mean by that? Just looking at the game you can tell that people rarely recognize someone by the way they look. They tell who someone is by the name hovering above their head.

I think it's pretty useful especially in an RPG such as this.

I agree that it would be cool to have, but unless you actually roleplay, then it would be a useless skill to have.

Now, if the game designers came up with player bounties and such, then it would have a use.

Honestly I don't see how giving smugglers aliases would hurt anyone because there are people around who know the value of smugglers regardless of their limited abilities. And just like you won't have a serious doctor say he can buff stats for 3k a piece and expect to see you return again for another set, you won't have a smuggler tell you he/she can augment your gear's effectiveness more than the alotted percentage allowed.

The one glitch in her example doesn't make the example any less valid. I can't tell you how many bank tips I've gotten from people trying to send a tip to 'Orian' and they send it to me 'Orion'. I happen to be a nice enough guy to contact the sender and try to reimburse their money, I'd bet cash money that most people are not like that.

And as to the second point, people do NOT know better about slices. Every day I slice for the public, I'm getting someone asking me "What quality are your tools" or "Slice it for speed". As much as we Smugglers would like, the truth about slicing is either not common knowledge, or ignored.

I apologize if it seemed like I was trying to say her concerns weren't valid. That wasn't my intention at all. I merely pointed out that numbers and symbols in names don't work because of the way the developers set things up.

As for people not knowing about how slicing works, I know that still happens, but I thought I made it clear that a smuggler won't tell you he/she can attain the impossible.

And I appologize if I came across stronger than I intended. I blame it on lack of coffee on a Sunday morning.

I would like to belive that a smuggler will be truthful, but I think that as inevitable as it is that one busshel of apples will have one or two that are rotten, there are rotten smugglers out there also; or, to be more accurate, rotten greifers that happen to be smugglers. If someone is going to grief and steal items or money from another player, then lying about what kind of slices that they can get is a minor crime, at best. And changing names on the fly to facilitate this is merely making it easier.

No problem.

I agree with you though that there are griefers who use the smuggler profession to gain things in a manner that's not intended. It does spoil it for us. I might be called naive for saying this, but I like to think that there are more honest players than there are griefers.

In any case I've always thought that only two names could be be used at the most. They're both tied to your character. The alias would be purely cosmetic like the profession titles are almost. The developers of course would have to fix that bug that doesn't allow for someone to select none in their character sheet and leave it that way.

As for the person saying someone can slice their weapon for more than the implemented percentage, it comes down to /report . If anyone says they can do this and are actually accomplishing this task then they're using some form of exploit. Other than that, slicers tell all who come up to them wanting guaranteed slices that it isn't possible. Them and others who get their slices done know this.

First of all, I know you can't use numbers or symbols (except apostrophes and hyphens) in names, but I was just giving examples, they weren't meant to be exact

Second, It took me, an honest, non-cheating, non-exploiting player about 10 minutes to make up and write those examples. Give a dishonest, cheating, exploiter two weeks and you'll see much more efficient and cruel ways to exploit the system.

Third, in my example of the "above normal" slices; the exploit wasn't the slicing % achieved. The exploit/grief is tricking unwitting/uninformed players into thinking this person's claim is legitimate and then ripping them off.

We won't have Smuggler's telling people they can augment weapons an armor more than the game allows? Hahaha! Where have you been my friend? People have been claiming to be able to give above normal slices for a long time. People have been claiming to be able to give predictable slices for a long time, and many of these people are still in business. Doctors claiming they can buff 3k per stat, no, but there are still Docs out there trying to rip people off. On Eclipse there's a Doc that charges 30K for buffs when everybody else charges 10K. He tries to justify it by saying he pays 300cpu for the best resources around (which is of course because he's a moron as these resources can be bought for far less), and amazingly he's still in business. There could be two Docs charging 10k for the same buffs right next to him, but yet some people still willingly pay three times the amount for the exact same buffs.

If you think there aren't people in this game, who won't try to rip off other players any way they possibly can, then you place far too much faith in the integrity of the human race my friend.
