Startrek? Bleh. If you want scifi, try EVE! Usually 8k+ players connected to the server at a time. Max number of userswas almost 13000... all onONE server with FIVE THOUSAND star systems and YOU CAN SMUGGLE. A game that rewards teamwork and long term planning over everything else. And it has a cool, sensible pvp system (no tiers of pvp-ness), and an active roleplay community of pirates, slavers, freedom fighters, ultranationalists,and propagandists.

The pace can be a bit slow at the start, but... I get lonely over there. Got no corporation to call home...

Geez. I'm sounding like an advertisement. Sorry. Just wish the smuggler diaspora would be a monodirectional exodus.
