Well sadly we have little love from the Devs so we make up for it in roleplaying the heck out of the best profession in the game. I have been giving Secret Smuggler Handshakes for about 5-6 months.
Oh, I agree it should only be done from Master Smuggler to Master Smuggler.

Someone did it on these boards months ago now (I forget who) and it went from there. At first it was just in our posts but someone else wrote the /emote string and posted it. Soon it was everywhere.
Ya I think it was here on the boards that I read about it.. I wasnt sure though if it was an emote.. I was standing next to a fellow master smuggler the other day and wanted to do the handshake and wondered if it was just an emote... us smugglers must have some of the greatest respect for one another in game.

The smuggler handshake involves bending over and accepting the warm gentle probeof your friendly proctologist pal, IE SOE.

I think it has been around even longer then that bpphantom, I know that I have been doing it since I hit Master back in November, and I had seen it quite a lot before then.
It is an old Smuggler's greeting to bridge the gap of not having a language of our own. It's a lot of fun, and the first thing a master should do when they train a new Master! 
Skip the "congrats" and "bow" and "welcome to the club"....nothing says "you've made it" like teaching them the Secret Smuggler handshake. In fact, I remember hearing of several smugglers who keep a record of who taught them the handshake and who taught them, and on, and on.

Like for me, a master smuggler named Digeed taught me the handshake, and it was taught to him by Lazarus (or something like that). I have taught it to Imolekae Iales, and Jebu.
It's a lot of fun, and yet another example of us making our own content and immersion.
