I got Master Smuggler shortly after launch in the HOPES that one day we would be able to smuggle.
Hasn't happened yet but I can give it up now.
If I was considering starting smuggler now though...I'd run the other way as fast as I could.

In terms of rolepaly, smuggler is pretty cool. But ya may want to wait until a Proffession revamp comes around. But feel free to try the great porfession out.

I actually have a fear that one day they'll give us our revamp, and suddenly they'll be Masters everywhere. I honestly think I might quit once I've smuggled my first item.

My initial reaction is to tell you not to waste your time, but when you consider that I have been a Master Smuggler since not long after launch, why would you trust me?
For me, I've only kept Master Smuggler this long for one reason and one reason alone. The only profession I have ever wanted to play in SWG was Smuggler.
That's it. My only reason.
So even though I:
1.) don't smuggle anything
2.) haven't made a crate of muon since the chef revamp
3.) rarely buy faction points
4.) and only slice for my friends
...I still consider myself a Smuggler. Go figure.
The Smuggler profession isn't about skills, because all our skills are either broken, useless, or nerfed. It isn't about loot, because we only get those crappy locked containers filled with 1 unit of Nabooian Mushroom and a weird hat. It isn't about being badass, because we only shine when the group gets wiped while we bash the feign death button and hope for the best. And it isn't about a template, because we got NOTHING in that regard.
So, in effect, the Smuggler profession is really only for the seriously bad-ass, hard-core, deep-down, masochistic, self-loathing, nerf-fearing, dev-hating, feign-deathing, low-blowing, scan-beating, scruffy nerfherder criminal-minded scum of the galaxy, and for all the chicks who love us.
And if any of that made sense to you, you probably ARE a Smuggler, so give it a shot.

There is one reason why Smuggler is worth having, and we've touched on it here. It's the same reason why the Squad Leaders and Rangers you meet are nearly always good guys. Same with Master Commandos and Bio-Engineers - cool people, all of them.
And that's because the professions are either so totally useless, so badly skewed or difficult to succeed in, that the repugnant littlesh!ts who infest the FOTR melee/CM templates and Jedi ranks don't come near our gloriously underachieving professions. And the very darkest, blackest part of me was long may that continue.

ok I have been a smuggler for some time (not as long as some but longer than others)I became a smuggler becouse I sough what the DEVs did for jedi and pikeman and thought well they got a cool revamp smuggler has to be good. Big mistake. the revamp never came and after foods there was no reason to be a smuggler ("why would I want moun gold when brandi lasts 3X longer with no down time"). So I got swordsman to fill the void that was cool for a time but only to a point. Of late I have been thinking of my future and after reading this thread I think it is time to give up the smuggling for something worth the time I play.
I hope this has helped you make your disition I usaly tell peaple "do it to say hay I was a smuggler"but don't stay long.

Ditto. As Mackle, lol, damn ninja posters.
You know that one speech in Trainspotting where the dude talks about what it's like being Scottish? Yeah, you can pretty much apply that to smugglers. I suppose the part where he's talking about colonization isn't a literal application, but with a little imagination you can change that into something about the level of dev attention or whatever.

Spot on for me also Mackle.
Bottom line is if you've been a smuggler for nearly two years you're insane and any answer we gave you shouldn't make any sense.

Please honest answers only!
cheers
So, I haven't posted in a while, but this I had to post on.
Yes, and maybe is my answer.
I gave up smuggler on my main toon about 2 months ago and I miss it. BADLY. It sounds sappy, but I mean it. I wanted a change so I started Shipwright and mastered Artisan. I kept TK to keep me alive when out at my place, but damn I miss Smuggler. I love the community here. Yeah, things may be broken/borked/not working/etc. but like everyone has been saying: It's all in the mind
I'd recommend that you try it, but I'm kind of biased
I'd recommend it to my mom if she played. You might not like it, you might hate it, or you might love it. All I can say is do what you want to do, not what I or anyone else tell you to do. You'll be much happier in the end.
Final words: To me, being a smuggleris like being home. Comfortable.

Smuggler was the profession that unlocked my jedi. Other than that is has done very little for me.
I keep it in hopes that they will introduce some smuggling missions.

I love smuggler, I don't care what other people say about it, I love it. I'll have to lose it on my main *whispersdoingthejedigrindwhispers* but as soon as I get my 2nd char slot, it'll be a smuggler.
If you want to go smuggler, do it knowing what the profession is, not what you want the profession to be.
On it's own,it's not an uber combat char and it's not an elite crafter. There are enough skill points left over to be either however. My own template is:-
Master Smuggler
Master TK
Novice WS
Novice AS
Survey 4
Business 3
The TKM means I can be a good combat char, the rest means I can craft in a manner that suits me ie I don't care what the resource quality is and I don't worry about endless experimentation. The spice does sell, maybe it doesn't sell as well as the old days, I can't say, but it does sell. I also make all my own slicing gear and again, I find thereIS a demand for slicing.
But I stress again, DO NOT become a Smuggler because you have a vision of what the prof should be, become one because it's a decent profession with a fair bit of scopeand you like what it's all about in it's present form.

I haven't been a master smuggler that long. Since November maybe, give or take a month. Is it worth it? It depends on what you want out of being a smuggler. I get to slice for my guildies and a few other good friends and I have some regulars that come to me for slicing. I like being able to open locked containers even though there's never anything good in them. I like enhancing the armor or the weapons for people. Sure, I get the bad slice and the disappointed customer but I love getting the great slice for my friends or for the total stranger who swears they're going to come back to me every time. I love the fact that I can be on Dathomir with no title on and I"ll get slicing tells from people I've never heard of. Its enough to drive one nuts sometimes
but its great fun. I love walking around in Mos Espa carting around my muon and my sliced armor and my sliced FWG5 and my sliced stun baton and being stopped for a contraband scan only to be told I'm clean and to move along.
Did you look in my bag at all? Did you notice the pistol I have? No, ok then. And I love the feign death button, its saved me more than I can think. Even in the occasional forced pvp. And now that's gone. Thanks devs.
Overall, is it worth it? I vote yes. Its not easy to give up once you start.
