Of course, there is a small possibility that one of the containers you buy will have a nice item to offset the cost of buying containers in the first place. I bought locked containers last week to raise slicing and hit the jackpot on one of the containers I bought. Inside was a clothing attachment with +1 medical experimentation on it which I sold for a million credits. I realize this is the SWG equivelent of winning the lottery, but you never know what you might find in those containers. I ended up with more then a tidy profit given all my expenses. Just be sure to save all those junk weapons for slicing once you are past containers.

I had a shout macro running that offered free spice in exchange for locked containers. I would then switch back and forth between crafting spice and tools and slicing the mission terminals. Most people are happy to help you out and the spice is a nice bonus gift/curiousty for them. It was a painful experience that epitomized the term "grind."There were a couple of master/former master smugglers who gave me 3 or 4 containers at a time.I've been away for a few months and I'm honestly a little stunned that they've never increased the drop rate of locked containers or added another way to gain slicing exprience for those first couple of boxes. I'm more than a little stunned that the smuggling profession hasn't changed at all since I've been away. I
Yeah, that was pretty much what I did. But with spices being overcast by the new chef recipes and the fact that people are only interested in Master Smuggler/Slicers to do the work for them, you may very well find yourself doing a grind. I finally attained my Slicer title last night, the last part I grinded through. Much to my shame. I had 10000 XP left and grew impatient waiting for customers.
From my POV, Slicing and FP trading is all a Smuggler has left in this game as a money maker, unless you combine Dirty Fighting with another elite combat profession to run missions. It is very disheartening, and people ask why some of us are pricing so high for slicing.
SWG is very economic driven and the major problem with the game is it allows new players to mix readily with older players. Therefore its easier for new players to obtain/want the best items early on. Who cares if you're not certified to use it and take a penalty? The bonuses by far outweigh them. I used a vibro knuckler when I was going through Unarmed Combat and I did better than when I had my bare fists, even with the penalties.
The game could try and make itself harder to intermix higher level players. WoW, from what I've been told, gradually expands a player's ability to travel out beyond their home area. Granted, I loved Corellia when I eventually got off Tatooine, but why bother getting a DL18 pistol from a starting Weaponsmith when you can afford a FW from a vendor that's just a hop and a skip away?
So instead you have people entering the game and grinding just to become competitive in the market.
Oh, and on the note of the profession not changing... from what I've read, it's been nerfed a few times. SWG is some abusive spouse that cripples us every few months, then lures us back with its sweet promises of how it's changed, baby.
Oops, I went off on a tangent.

So I spent my first night as a Smuggler outside the Starport in Coronet. Found crates of clamps on the bazaar for 6k.
I got six containers overall. Not bad for two hours of work. One of them happened to be inside another container. What a lovely thing!
I guess I'm 1/4 of the way there!
Thanks for all of the advice, guys. Some guy walked out of the starport and started spamming "Anyone Buying Locked Containers? I'm selling them for 10k!"
I responded "I'm opening them!"
No response.

I Totally agree..... It was different back when the game first came out. People didn't have as many options to goto and just seeing a smuggler was a big deal.
There are so many mobs that have them and you need the pistol xp anyway, I would stock pile them in my bank account and when I got like 10 or more I would sit down and have a little slicing party, Any low level npc mob that spawns offen, like those near Corrnet or Mos eisley. will spawn a container more offen then in the past. No one should have to pay 6k for a container.

DO NOT PLACE SPICE OR ITEMS IN UNLOCKED CONTAINERS
I can not say that enough or loud enough.
I am a former master smuggler and I can tell you player paranoia will override the surprise.
Spice will have the creators name on it. If a player is wise to this he may assume you removed an item and placed spice in to compensate it.

I've never really had that issue come up.
In fact, most of the players tried to give me back the spice, saying they never use it.
Give ya three guesses why.

Hobbs...ditto...this has never backfired for me. No one's ever given me grief about their containers. But I suppose it can happen. Just be aware. But then, they'll say it no matter what.

Or do what I did instead
Happened to go on Jabba mission for the corvette ticket, which sent me and a friend to a pirate bunker on Naboo. Easy pistol xp ranging from 800-1300xp, also giant Peko-Peko in the area but the best part is the bunker itself ! Magseal containers with 60% chance of a locked containers inside. Got 12 in 2 hours, which helps alot
