OK. I posted this on my galaxy board (farstar) and someone suggested I posted it here. Please note I have never played a smuggler and am not suggesting this because I see it benefitting me. I am a Master WS on farstar and so this could actually hurt my business (I do all I can to avoid reselling).
Here it comes.. as posted:
============
OK.. first off, I don't like resellers. If I see somebody reselling my stock I ban them from my shop. There is one person I have allowed to resell for sometime though because he is a smuggler and has a nice slicing shop near coro and he doesn't charge insane prices like most people. He comes to my shop every week or so and he buys a bunch of stock, but knowing of my policy on resales (I had a vendor barking about it), he cunningly only buys a small amount of stock and has the decency to always leave something for other people.
The thing is... if smugglers are to make any decent number of credits, slicing is the way to go. Spice used to be a good thing for them, but with buffs and food, this option has been removed. With the pressures on most crafters to keep a well stocked shop most smugglers who try to resell are often banned...
So I would suggest the following... for Master smugglers only, when they slice a weapon or a piece of armour, they cunningly remove any evidence of who the original maker was (this datafield is removed) and they also get the option to rename the item in the same way a SW can rename rev engineered components. All this would require is a new tool at Master smuggler level that works in the same way as a RE tool for SW.
This would then allow smugglers to make a living. It fits with what should be their role in SWG and actually allows them to smuggle!
This opotion should be placed in the Master Box to avoid people getting the slicing skill jsut to be able to resell at huge profits, and would really give the smuggler community a viable way of making a living.
Of course, some 'bad' smugglers will not be able to make their living anyway, as they would be stupid and go clear out vendors getting a nice fat ban for their troubles... The intelligent smugglers will buy up just a few items form a vendor at any one time and thus avoid detection. They could then remove any identifying marks and would be able to sell their wares without being caught

you ban people who buy from you if they try to resell your weapons? wow you are nice to your customers.
do you also ban your customers who just resells your weapons because they don't want it more. who about your customer who buys from you and gives to away, and that person decides to resell it?

When I'm buying weapons, I typicly sit on a vendor buying then slicing till I get the slice that I want, then I'll give the rest away or just dump them on my friends vendors for them to sell. Man I'm glad I don't get banned from shops for that.
Heaven forbid a customer actually be able to do what they want with the item that they payed for. What does it really matter to you if they resell your stuff, you got paid for your goods, take your money and be happy.

The thing is... if smugglers are to make any decent number of credits, slicing is the way to go. -lol, smuggling would be the way to go, fixing our spice market would be the way to go, clearing names of the BH terminals would be the way to go SMUGGLING would be the way to go. Spice used to be a good thing for them, but with buffs and food, this option has been removed.- thanks for filling us inWith the pressures on most crafters to keep a well stocked shop most smugglers who try to resell are often banned...- Smugglers should not be buying weapons slicing them and reselling them for bulk sale in an open market, it is illegal after all and floods the market place further lowering our price for slices, we need to move away from this. What a sad state of affairs.
So I would suggest the following... for Master smugglers only, when they slice a weapon or a piece of armour, they cunningly remove any evidence of who the original maker was (this datafield is removed) and they also get the option to rename the item in the same way a SW can rename rev engineered components. This would then allow smugglers to make a living. -lol It fits with what should be their role in SWG and actually allows them to smuggle!- huh? our roll is not to be slice sl*ts for the server our roll is to SMUGGLE. Spend some time reviewing all the way we have offered the dev team to do this. Naming a sliced weapon is not smuggling, sorry.
This opotion should be placed in the Master Box to avoid people getting the slicing skill jsut to be able to resell at huge profits, and would really give the smuggler community a viable way of making a living. - again we are not jawa's resale is not what smugglers do.

Apparently someone really didn't want to hear what the ACTUAL smugglers thought of this post and one starred you all...
I gave ya 5 Stars to balance it out a little.
And for the person who wants to come and one star me... I'm a Master Weaponsmith/Master Smuggler... call myself a gunrunner... and I'm sticking with the smuggler comments on this one!

You know what strikes me is this seemingly wide spread belief that what a smuggler should is is anything but smuggler. I appreciate the thought from this person, but it seems to me if you want to make smuggler useful in one easy step...(everyone together now)...LET US SMUGGLE!
Are we the only people who see this? The devs don't, and it seems the other professions don't see it...what's so hard about coming to the conclusion that smugglers should smuggler. It just astounds me when non-smugglers and devs talk about smugglers, the one thing they rarely mention is smuggling.

Here's another idea. Remove slicing entirely, free us from our whore-itude, and replace the tree with a SMUGGLING tree, tied to the BH investigation tree...
I don't slice. I slice for guildies when I have tools. I slice for myself(which is actually what slicing is for). A lot of us don't publicly slice. It's not our job, or our duty, or our primary source of income. Where's my money come from? loot.
You can't make things better by taking the albatross and plating it with gold, that just makes it heavier on our neck.
On a side note, anyone notice how vicious we were in response to this thread? It's like we're the kid SOE's ashamed of, and keeps chained under the porch, and when one of the normal kids tries to talk to us, we kill them and eat them
But then, anyone who's never been a smuggler doesn't want to be a smuggler, and therefore doesn't know the suffering of a smuggler. Only people that have it close to how we have it is the entertainers.

Interesting idea, Max, but instead of getting rid of Slicing entirely, what about the idea that's been bouncing around for a while, making sliced items non-tradable.

That could also work. The main point being we were never meant to slice for everybody. They aren't buffs for guns, they're supposed to be a tradeoff for our profession, more power, less defense. If the combat mechanics worked the way our prof was designed, smugglers would be viable in pvp, We'd just have to get off our shots before that TKM got ahold of us. That's what the "rogue" is about, Lowblow+Lastditch=they're dead, or you miss, and hit burst run, and when all else fails, feign. Then everyone wants slices, then the devs cop out and add buffs, and it becomes a flawed and broken system.
