I was thinking as I drove the freeway today that smugglers should have their own language, and after reading a certain thread where much was said and not said, it further motivated me to make mention of it. We need a language that only smugglers know. Criminals seem to always have their own way of saying something without saying something, like mobsters talking about murdering someone without ever really saying it. It would be cool if they added smuggler's speak to the Underworld line, a language that can't be taught to a non-smuggler, so we can conduct business without anyone knowing what we're saying. One easy way would be giving us the ability to speak Jawa to each other, since this is already in game as a language only we can understand.
What do you all think?

I like the idea - I like the thought of insulting rude customers without them knowing it (Cuz I am a people person after all). But I suspect this wouldnt' even be on the mighty Dev radar for quite some time.
Plus, I'm sure everyone will teach it to everyone within 5 seconds of it being introduced. If it's not teachable then people may pick up the novice box if it becomes popular.
I much fancy the idea (yes I used the phrase "much fancy") of smugglers developing their own lingo and using it in game - basically my model is Brad Pitt in "Snatch"
Without much thought and using in game terminology:
Chuba - refer to a fellow smuggler - Chubas are unassuming - but flesh eating and therefore dangerous - just like smugglers
Baz Nitch - "Dumb Idea" because really what a dumb name
LukeIt - "Togo on a massivelyheroric journey with a small statistical chance of success"
Terminaled "Getting/got a job"
Hispac'en - Hyperspacing "Going to"
Kissing Luke - stronger than "Baz Nitch" Meaning - Dude - seriously messed up
So Smuggler A describing a job running a shipment thourh Kessel to Smuggler B would go:
Smuggler A: Yo Chuba,terminaled - Hispac'en Kessel - Lukeit style!
Smuggler B: Baz Nitch Chuba
Smuggler B: Seriously- Kissing Luke Chuba!
Dang
This is what happens when I drink too much coffee.

I think you're on the right track - I know that everyone remembers "Blade Runner" in the open China Town scenes they so a Asian Fellow talking in gabberish, Harrison Ford tried to explain it as 7 languages spoken by common people living in close proxmity together for to long that the language bled over into each other. In Southern California, we call this Spangish (spainish and English), the devs did this to the Twileks and give them their own language, So I can totally see this falling to us in the Underworlds Skill boxes.

A language overhaul is needed in the game. If understanding languages wasn't an everyday thing, smugglers might make some dough working deals out between players.
Or better yet, if a merchant spoke basic to an alien who could understand it, but not speak it themself... it would make for some GREAT player interactions. If the merchant couldn't understand this aliens dialect, perhaps they could resort to the alien nodding or shaking their head.. OR hiring/asking a smuggler.
MUCH more Star Warsy.

There's actually something like this in the Star Wars universe already. In fact, I saw it first come up in the Paradise Snare in the Han Solo Trilogy.
It's called "Trader's Argot". Here's what it's explained as: "a bastardized mix of a dozen or more tongues and severeal dialects, with no fixed syntax"
So, it'd basically be like 20 launguages being mixed together with no syntax of verbs or nouns, you'd just have to know what word means what.
Smuggler_Caylin has this in his revamp proposal as "Smuggler's Cant". I still like "Trader's Argot" better since it's actual Stat Wars cannon.
Here's another post on it from earlier this year: CLICKY

I have thought this for a long long time. I had great fun with a Twi'lek friend who roleplayed not being able to speak anythign but Lekku. It was great fun for him and me since he could say whatever he wanted, except to other Twi'leks and I had to translate.

I don't know, I think the closest we're going to get to a Trader's Argot from the Devs might be a happy, "Fuhgetaboutit!"

Second post ina row that I've been beaten to the punch. Ahhhh well. Yes, we need Trader's Argot. and as was mentioned in the previous thread on it, it would also be learnable by high level merchants and Bh's. But it would definitely need to be controlled. If that was a language in the game, I'd speak in it practically always. I mean what a boon to us if we had a lekku-esque language. Though I do love being able to understand lekku. They'd better not ever take that away.

What about Protocol Droids? Shouldn't they understand that language too?

Well, no and yes. The current droids shouldn't. They should introduce droids along with this that act as translators. I know that's what a protocol droid generally does, but not in this game apparently.

The patch notes mentioned a new droid interface, and i wasn't sure if that affects all droids, or just astromechs and flight computers. I would think protocol droids SHOULD be able to learn the language, but Smugglers would be the only ones capable of programming them as such.
