Thread: Think you can make the Kessel run in 12 parsecs?

Because while a Kimogila's firepower may be tempting, you're not a smuggler unless you can burn some serious space. Let's hear some max speeds!

I'm cruising around Starsider in a modified Dunelizard with a 910 cruising speed. Boosters and emergency thrust top it out at 1434. Sometimes I really wish I could arm her better, but actually being able to outrun my enemies when I get in a tight spot feels great.

Back when I had a good engine but not a great one, I was cruising around Lok when I ran into a bunch of TIE Fighters. I was alone, but hotshot that I am up in space, I had no doubts I'd mop the sky with them; about a minute into the fight, my shields were dead, my armor was going, and I only had one of them dead. Well, a scene like that's my cue to exit stage left--so I punched in the hyperdrive to Tatooine, kicked in my boosters, and keyed up the emergency thrust.

..which promptly shut down my reactor.

So there I was, three TIEs closing fast, my forward momentum keeping going for a ways but fading rapidly. Let's see, hyperdrive 25%, armor 100%. Hmm, hyperdrive 50%, armor 25%. That's not cool. The last of my armor drops and I'm certain I'm dead: watching for the EJECT button to pop up, wondering what people will say at my eulogy. 75%, and they start hitting my systems--and miracle of miracles, the first thing they waste is my booster. Then the shields, I've got to be on the very brink of death, and then Mercury smiles upon me and the sweetest of sights appears on my screen: 5.. 4.. 3.. 2.. 1..

And away I go.

Without a doubt, it was the most Star Wars feeling I have ever had playing this game. Anyone else want to compare, er, fuel rods as to ship speed? Or got any good escape stories? JTL may not have added any smuggler-specific content, but some of the situations you get in feel pretty Han Solo regardless.

Just a slight correction.....parsecs don't measure speed, it's a measurment of distance. 3.27 lightyears to be exact.

The only reason I can see Han saying that is that hyperspace requires calculations for navigation and Kessel may be a part of space with lots of obstacles and the best smugglers can plot a course that shortens the distance they have to travel. This is probably a dangerous course taking the ship very close to stars or other large gravity wells while in hyperspace.

There's an explanation there.

Yeah, that's the only explaination I've come up with myself, 'cause its like saying "I walked to the store in twelve feet."

However, you know, hey may have just been trying to BS Obi-Wan and Luke with jargo to get them to pay him for a charter trip. Hell, I know I may have tried it, were I in his situation.

Hey, I know parsecs are a measurement of distance and not speed, give a guy some credit. Han's claim has always made me think he was snorting Shadowpaw.

So do the lack of on-topic responses mean you're all tooling around in looted 30.2 base engines or what?

Because the Kessel region is heavily influenced by a cluster of black holes known as the "Maw", it's possible for very good, or very lucky, pilots to plot hyperspace routes that skirt the edge of The Maw so closely that it warps space, thus cutting time AND distance off of the route.

However...if you screw up the hyperspace calculations, you're toast...

You can read about Han's famous record breaking Kessel Run in the book Rebel Dawn... apparently the Kessel Run was taken at sublight speeds since all the black holes surrounding the part of the course called "The Maw" made calculating even a short hyperspace jump incredibly risky. To make it through the Maw, pilots had to very carefully pilot their ships through the areas of space where the gravity wells of the black holes on all sides of them balanced out. During Han's record breaking run, he was being chased by an Imperial customs ship and flying around way faster and much more recklessly than he ususally did on the Run. After he escaped, he looked at the instruments and saw that they'd made the run in less than 12 parsecs, which in his mind confirmed the rumor that by skirting too far into the gravity wells of a few of the black holes while traveling at such insanely high speeds you could distort time and space and make the trip faster and shorter. Chewie, who was shedding at this point from nervousness, thought Han just fried the instruments.

Anyway, my X wing tops out at 870 with no booster... my A wing was 980 or something using that engine.

and that legendary run was the same where he had to drop his cargo from Jabba and started his whole thing that led up to being frozen in carbonite!!!!!!!

So basically what I was guessing at

To answer the thread topic, I have a 60+ engine...haven't found anything better but heard there is a reward engine in the 90's.

Nice. I thought I was jammin with 1185 in my dunelizard. Normal top speed is like 780. My syck can hit a top speed of 984.

Ya it feels way Han Solo when you barely jump out while being blasted at and nearly disabled.
