While I was waiting for a shuttle in Coronet (Naritus server) a couple days ago, one of the players was talking to his friend who sliced a weapon for him, but could not slice his helm. I offered to do it for him. When I did, a "Master" Smuggler poped off and said he could do it better.
Of course I started laffing at him and so did the other master smuggler standing next to me. We told him it was totally random and nothing he could do would make his slices better. He said tools and focus makes a difference and did we think we knew better than the devs. When we laffed agasin, he said he knew it was true because he was a dev....at which point he called us morons.
I should have gotten his name to post, but it really doesn't matter. What does matter is 2 things:
1. As far as anything I've seen playing and talking to other players or reading the boards it doesn't, but lets hear it Devs. Does the tool or focus make a difference?
2. As I really doubt this guy was a dev, its a dumb question, but I'll ask any way. If this guys is a Dev, are the Dev's in the habit of going around calling players morons?

He was not a dev and he was wrong...but you already knew that, right?

GM, you keep this up, and you're going to quickly become a Smuggler favorite (as if you already weren't). But you already knew that too, eh?

So is that a definitive answer on the "tools make no difference" debate?

If he was a master smuggler he gets a better chance at higher slices. But that is if you arent a master yourself
I was just assuming since the first smuggler couldnt slice the armor
But other than that havent noticed any difference in slicing.

NikkiDial has it correct. The Master box improves slicing, but the tool quality and other things do not.

THANK YOU!
Now, if you could just confirm that Weapon slices above 35% were not possible, you would be my hero for the week...

It's generally my policy (and the company's policy) not to discuss numerical specifics.

Why do they not? What is the reason to craft a better quality tool then, if it does not matter?
Shouldn't you redesign the crafting a bit, huh?

While he is posting here...
GreenMarine, weren't you working for 3d Realms at one point and time? I could have sworn I saw your name on their site once...

They don't because I didn't have time to implement it back before SWG went live. We had so much stuff to do and so little time to do it! We'll definitely be improving slicing and the smuggler's control over slicing at some point in the future. A revamp discussion thread on slicing will show up at some point, but I think that we'll probably talk about some of the general issues first.
