...they're just an extention of crafting!

What in the heck is up with slicing increasing the abilities of armor and weapons? How does this make any sense at all? Yeah, I know the argument of "well, we couldn't figure out a way to make smugglers and their slicing skill attractive any other way". Well, this way is total bollux. Seriously. Why would a weapon designer purposfully engineer limitations into their weapons to reduce it's effectivness? To make it LESS attrative to a buyer? The Empire sure doesn't seem to give a dang what you sell. Even if they did, I think that people would just publicly sell the lobotomized weapons, while the good stuff would be sold "under the counter". And just HOW do you "slice (or hack)" armor to penalize your pools less or increase it's effectivness? It's frigging armor! It's not like you can plug in a laptop, and magically make compositplates weigh less.

Please, give smugglers some logical use to the slicing skill (Like some breaking and entering into certain areas? Buildings that spawn for certain missions? Stealing data for a mission? Anything?), and make the quality of armor and weaponry be dependant on the manufacturer, where it should be.

Maybe you could includea "Fast Talking" skill tree (or add it in as part of another tree). Something that lets smugglers bypass certain faction point restrictions on areas and quests, maybe gives them additional quests or access to special restricted areas (and access for people they choose to help get into those areas...selling passkeys, anyone?). Might even let them talk their way out of situations with the authorities.

Imagine, getting a quest to retrieve certain data from an imperial (or rebel, or jabba, or valarian, or Incom, or whatever, be crative) research facility. You have to use slicing to break locks, Fast Talking to avoid problems with guards (maybe even bribe some officials to open doors?), and try to calm the guy who stumbles in, wondering what you are doing messing with the central data core deep in the local moff's personal laundry room.

Smugglers are supposed to be scoundrels, aka, roguish characters. Let them be that way, not just an extention to artisen crafting.

And as for why a weaponsmith would purposefully limit their product? Your car has a govenor on it, right? that's imposed by government law, right? Automatic weapons are outlawed, right? They have to be illegally converted right?

Here's whatI imagineslicing armor would be like in this Sci-Fi canon.

The difference in SWG is that almost all of our weapons and armour are essentially "homemade" in tiny autofactories scattered all over, not mass-produced in big public factories like Ford make cars. The average WS or AS (game-logic wise) could make gear "pre-sliced" without the randomness of building in limits only for us to remove them later.
I think it's an academic discussion though; it's become our profession-defining skill in the eyes of most of the playerbase, so I don't see us ever losing it. Not that I'd want to :-)

Oh, don't blast me just because I'm new.

I think it's more telling that it took me all of 9 days of casual play, from never having known anything about this game at all, to come to this conclusion. Especially when the dev team (which has been at this for how many months?) doesn't seem to understand it yet.

Doesn't matter. Your guns in RL are regulated with the amount of fire power they can put out...they're the same in Galaxies. We get around said regulations. That's why it even SAYS in the slicing window that you are bypassing Imperial restriction hardware.

The slicing process that we see is just removing the security built into the weapon to prevent tampering, but that's not all that's really involved in modifying weaponry. Think of it as adding nitro boosters to a car. Sure you can buy a powerful car from Ford, or even a powerful car that somebody built at home, but there's always the possibility to squeeze out some extra power. That's what weapon slicing is all about, tweaking the components to squeeze out some extra juice, but unfortunately as I already said the only part we see is the removing of the security features meant to prevent tampering.

Slicing armor can be a bit tougher to come up with a suitable metaphor for, but even the weapons example isn't perfect since, y'know, we can slice melee weapons that have no moving parts

Armor encumb is pretty easy to explain if you've ever seen a street racer (to keep up with the car metas) Everything you dont need in that car is pulled out, the only thing left in it is a steering whell, a seat, a seatbelt and pedals. The same with armortake out the extra padding or some otehr non esetial stuff.

Armor effect is kinda harder, but maybe adding some new protection plates or somethign like that.

I can go online and buy all the parts to put together, myself, an AR-15/M-16 style rifle.
If I had the casting dies and molds, I could build it from scratch, using schematics and recipes found in books and on the internet.
This is the same thing, basically, that WS and AS are doing. The smuggler is the person that finds the way to make that semi-auto weapon, full auto. Or ways to increase the way that weight is dispersed for armor plating, thereby DECREASING its encumberance.

The WS and AS only have the basic info on how to put this stuff together, not how to lake a popgun a LAW rocket... thats MY job as a Smuggler.

well I was going to post more on this but some of you all already made the point enough times over hehe Just because it's an item doesn't mean it's max to the extreme. Most things that are built can be made to be more effective in use. They aren't done so because of safety or regulations. Plus companies want people to buy their items now then later come out with a slightly better version. If the item is not max before they can get closer now even just using the same parts and sell the same product over again... greedy little bastages =)
