Thread: Dirty Fighting idea, hamstringshot

Ok, I may be coming in a little late to make a suggestion for dirty fighting, but I hope not. Especially if something like this has already been brough up, but bear with me for a moment:

You're on your way from Jabba's Palace with a fresh load of contraband scheduled for delivery on Corellia when you're yanked from your speeder by an imperial patrol. You know if you lose this shipment that you're name is gonna be appearing at the top of bounty hunter lists all over the galaxy. You can't get to your bike, so you start to run: but before you can make it over the next hill that patrol of stormtroopers has surrounded you weapons at the ready and fingers itching to pull the triggers.

"Alright, you got me," you say, moving as though to place your blaster on the ground.

Before the stormtroopers know what hit them you pepper the area with blaster shots, all of them aimed at the legs. Three of the troopers hit the ground immediately clutching their legs and howling. The others open fire but you've already broken through their ranks and are running for your swoop a hundred meters away. The troopers move to follow, but find themselves stiff and slow to move. Another falls from the effort of giving chase. In fact, of the eight troopers you originally faced only one of them is able to keep up with you all the way back to your vehicle, so you turn to face him. The stormtrooper looks around, realizing at once just how alone he is and that the odds are nolonger in his favor. By the time his companions catch up the scorch marks on his armor are beginningto cool and you're burning a trail across the desert sands...

A lengthy intro to a simple idea? Maybe, but I couldn't help myself. The idea is /hamstringshot, and /hamstringshot2 (the difference being that the second one is an area effect the first is single target but more accurate). Cuts the movement rate of whomever it hits to so slow as to be rediculous if they tried to give chase, it lasts about the length of a disease (or until treated by a doctor) with a small percentage chance of knocking the person down when first hit and an even smaller chance whenever they are trying to move any faster than a walk.

Too powerful, the nerf bat would hit us before we got 2 shots off.

Just a minor technical point here but the hamstring is on the BACKSIDE of your leg...
If you are surrounded and all the bad guys are facing you, unless you have homing lasers, you arent going to be hitting any hamstrings with a blaster.
Besides, Smugglers already have a KD shot... its called Low Blow

Counterpoint to your technical point:

Main Entry: 2hamstring
Function: transitive verb
Inflected Form(s): ham·strung /-"str&[ng]/; ham·string·ing /-"stri[ng]-i[ng]/
1 : to make ineffective or powerless : CRIPPLE <hamstrung by guilt>
2 : to cripple by cutting the leg tendons

So while you may not be targeting the actual hamstring (who knows if a Dosh even has one) you're emracing the verbal aspect of the attacks title, and it's greater spirit. On a side note, try not to be so **edit** retentive.

As for the nerf factor? This attack would probably replace 'low-blow' (don't pistoleers have a straight up knockdown anyways) and would be as effective without the knockdown for fast escapes as with. It effects none of the targets combat abilities so all it allows a Smuggler to do is get away if they want... which, if I'm not mistaken is the intent of this re-evaluation of dirty fighting.

Keep objecting though, I can play this game all week.

I like the idea (and very imaginative introduction to it, I want more of teh story! lol).

Not sure how it is a nerf issue, it is a retreat tactic, much like knockdowns, panic shot and war cry. Keep it low damage, so it is a state attack, not a damage attack.

The nerf issue is that it's basically proposing an area KD (which really isn't a bad idea in and of itself). And while you say it's a retreat tactic, there are definitely ways it would be exploited (not in the bad / cheating way) to gain an advantage.

As it is now, the "bread-and-butter" Smuggler combo is /lowblow; /lastditch. Taking advantage of the 1.5x damage modifier on a KDed target and using the right pistol, you can do upwards of 5k damage in PvE with this.

Now, think about this /hamstring proposal...area KD, and combine it with...say.../fanshot (or /multitarget if they ever make it work right) from Pistoleer. Multiple targets KDed, /fanshot doing area damage. You can quickly see how this would be moved to the nerf list not long after it was implemented.

The damage on this particular shot itself would be a non-issue. /lowblow does almost no damage by itself. It's what you follow it up with that matters. The same would be said of this proposed shot.

I like the Idea of just slowing them down. Perhaps if the chanceof a kd was low enough it would pass the nerf censors. Or maybe it would just kd the target while slowing the others in the area of attack down.

I like the slowing them down part too. What if it JUST did that? No damage, no knock down (though I understand why you put it in there...it only makes sense). Just /hamstring.

Yeah...the slow down part is cool. In Lineage, there are certain spells and such that slow down your targets and come in very handy. I think a pistol shot could do the same thing and could slip past the nerf radar. Making it a KD would just be overpowering though...

What if it were a slow, and if someone used burstrun there was like a 50% chance of getting KD'ed, the reason i say this is because even if it does slow the target, all theyll do is /burstrun to run at normal speed.

I like the idea, but it would be a massive tactical advantage; we could use this to easily kite melees, or close in with kiters if we're melee fighters ourselves. Now multiply this benefit in group PvP if it's area-effect...

One alternative could be to make it an area-effect posture down. That would still be an asset to escape, but more balanced. It doesn't make a target helpless, but it does stop them dead; but they have a chance to keep chasing if they react quickly enough.

Well ya'll have the handle on balance, I described the shot as I felt would be appropriate for how it was described. The most important element: the status change that reduces speed to a certain maximum until the status is changed (by doctor or time), is all that's required for this to be a strategic shot that's actually worth something. Of course, I'm in favoring of asking for everything first and settling for what we can get afterwards.

So my question to all you forum veterans is two-fold:

1. Are there any more nay-sayers, specifically people who hate the idea of an attack like this or have a list of better ideas for smuggler dirty fighting techniques.

and

2. If everyone is behind this, or not opposed to it, what's the next step to get this in the hands of someone who can actually make this a part of the game? If there's a correspondent reading this who'll run it up the flagpole drop a line and let me know. Else if I've got to do it, that's cool too.
