I would like to see Ship components able to be sliced. In the same fasion and with the same results as the current slicing gives. Also give the Master Smugglers/ Master Pilots the ability to put hidden compartments in thier MP ships. These compartments could have thier own item count separate of the ship, as to add a bonus and use for the compartments.

I know I'd like to see smugglers make personal ship modifications...

However while I love the basic idea that smugglers should have a chance to modify ships we have one very big problem in getting that done.

JTL was balanced without those modifications in mind and the addition of such a skill will require them to rebalance the whole friggin thing from the ground up.

not a slice monkey

I don't know how many remember tell hell. But it was, well hell. Running through coronet with a master smuggler tag was a garanteed ten tells from different people wanting slices even before you loaded. With all the ship parts about it would just be a return to those times.

And as it's been said JTL is balanced. Slicing ship components would just be start of a recurance of what happened on the ground. First people would be getting uber slices, then people would want uber looted equipment and then the devs would bring out a patch to fix it and half the specials would stop working. Then a six months later they would promise a JTL CURB and then one year after that we might see it nearly compeleted. Oh and the smuggler revamp would be pushed back again.

I think I would prefer to only be able to slice one aspect of my ship - the mass

The increase in mass would be equivalent to a certain value, let's call this value x

Icannot usethe additional mass x for any componentother than a hidden storage container, which come in various grades, in the way starship components do. The level of container you can fit into your ship depends on the Underworld tree.

I can then store x units of resources, crates or items in the hiddenstorage container

All star systems are blockaded by the Empire. Imperial crews have been mobilised to randomly search for and confiscate all contraband equipmentmajorstarports. The contraband list has been extended to include weapons grade resources and premium medical supplies

These scans have 100% success rates on all players scanned regardless of profession. But the scan success rate is inversely proportionalon the grade of the hidden storage container.

The punishment for a player without a storage container fitted is loss of all confiscated contraband. The punishment for players with hidden storage containers fitted can be limited to confiscation of all contrband and a heavy fine or it can be confiscation of their ship. The chance of ship confiscation increases with hidden container grade.

Players with storage containers are informed of the scan results and can dump all contraband before punishment is determined. The player no longer fails the scan and is free to go. However, the action of dumping the cargo increases the visibility of the Smuggler on the Bounty Hunter terminals, with the owner of the dumped cargo receiving a message that the Smuggler is now visible. He is then free tohire a BH, with the promise of additional reward for terminating the smuggler, as smuggler missions are not as attractive to BHs as the higher paying Jedi missions.

I don't want to slice ship components...I'm NOT an engineer. I want to smuggle.

And, secret compartments is all fine and dandy IF there is a smuggling USE for them...which of course there is not.

That was the point of my post...that I'd only welcome slicing ship parts if they were in a smuggling minigame

Actually there is a way that we could slice components without it screwing up the JTL balance.

JTL was balanced with a wacky version of slicing called "Reverse Engineering". Shipwrights can improve a ship component by dropping it in a crafted item that does some voodoo on it and spits out a better one. The catch on reverse engineering is that as the ship component level increases the number of components needed to do the RE job increases to match. So an L10 weapon requires 10 identical L10 weapons to RE. (I gotta say it baffles me that anyone manages that at all. In all my JTL time I haven't found 10 L10 guns period, let alone 10 identical ones.) Anyways, once you RE your 10 L10 weapons you get one in return that has the best of all stats plus a percent improvement. So an RE'd L10 item is pretty much uber, far beyond the sums of its parts. Likewise an L1 item that is RE'd returns one that just applies the percent improvement since it doesn't have any other items to take stats from. The percent improvement is also lower for an l1 item.

So here's my big component slicing idea... who wants to spend the time to find 10 identical items when you feel lucky to have looted 1 of them? So bring it to a smuggler to slice. The smuggler can take any component regardless of level and provide a percent improvement to it. A sliced L10 gun will be better than the original but still far below the RE'd supergun. I would make it so that the percent slice range has the minium percent equal to a L1 RE job and the maximum percent equal to a L10 RE job.

This would make it more advantagous to slice low level items than RE them making it easier for newbs to improve their ships and also would allow Ace's to get a bit more bang for their buck without having to loot for years.

One last thought, shipwright components aren't able to be RE'd but I would think they could be sliced. Would add another whole profession to the list of folks that hire us for bulk jobs.

Considering that most crafted items aren't as good as looted/RE'd, I would favor slicing crafted items only to make them more competitive. Otherwise this sounds good to me.

Yes this is a good idea. The slicing of the crafted components would bring back the usefullness of shipwrights, which is a dying profession, and make the crafted items wanted again.

Highlighted the part I need to correct you on. You don't need *identical* items, they just have to be the same Engineering level.

Example:

ShipWright takes a level 3 KSE Capacitor, level 3 Sienar Capacitor, and a level 3 CEC Capacitor, and engineers them into a new level 3EngineeredCapacitor. They are not identical. I did the same basic thing with my ShipWright for a level 6 Capacitor. The only thing that needs tobe "identical"is the Engineering level.
