I have not been a smuggler in about 3 months and have nout been keeping up with the smuggler forums. But I will be a smuggler again when JTL comes out. I would love to be able and do the kessle run. How cool would that be? You could also get special loot form killing starships and upgrade your engines and like the the person with the standing fastest kessel run can get special missions from jabba to get special loot. Or if you can make the kessle run in a certain amount of parsecs then you can be employed by jabba or other smuggling organizations (black sun). There could be special loot for those. It coule be like the smuggler theme park. I think if there was a special theme park for every profession that would keep people interested in the game longer. Anyways my 2 cents.

Slick vision.
These are the things that could make the game feel more like Star Wars movies.
Like the song saysI'm "hopin' and waitin' and wishin' "

Funny thing is, a parsec is a measurement of distance, not time (as per my physics teacher a LONG time ago). A friend who read all the SW books toldme that Hanwent a mite bit closer to a black hole than was considered reasonably safe or something of that nature.

Time = Distance
Having a ship fast enough to pass closer to gravity wells w/out disturbing its course + good navigation saves him distance which Saves time.

Yeah the "unofficial" explanation for Han's use of distance in that linehas been that the "run" to kessel has you weaving and dodging past all kinds of nastyness. The smugglers who can navigate the shortest course are the best. Kind of like finding a short cut to India in Columbus's day... everyone else was going round Africa, but if there was a shortcut that only you knew of, you would be a wealthy man.
On an interesting side note, I read a FAQ about JTL tecently that mentioned we would be able to fly near novas and such, but risked getting hit by Ionic or electrical discharges... perhaps a Kessel run type of encounterawaits us inside the novas and such?

Hmm think you just gave me another idea on how to shake pursuit once our revamp gets done.......any BH's feel like sun surfing?

Next to kessel lies "The Maw", a cluster of black holes. When you make a run out of Kessel the closer you dare go to the black holes the faster you can get away and the less chance of pursuit. Anybody can take the safe long route at any speed, but the shorter the kessel run (and closer to the black holes), the more impressive it is.
The Jedi Academy book trilolgygivesa very good description of all this. By the way, 7 years after the movies the new Kessel record was by Luke, navigating THROUGH the black hole cluster by using The Force.

Not to mention that Han got a little TOO close to the black hole and thus space was warped a bit, making the distance he seemed to travel much shorter than the distance he actually travelled (just finished the Han Solo Trilogy again recently, and remembered that part).

I think it sounds like a great idea, but I do have one question.
What exactly happens to us if we say... screw up and actually get too close?
