Letter number 2: IGN

Hello there.

I am a huge Star Wars fan and a number of months ago I decided to (finally) get online with SWG. My favourite character in the movies has always been that lovable scoundrel Han Solo (who doesn't love that guy, really).

An obvious first choice to aspire to would be Smuggler, so I did. Little did I know that I was not going to be able to actually smuggle anything.

Instead, I was somewhat of a slice-monkey. I say somewhat - because at least a slicer could control his slices. Once they 'fixed' slicing so you could now choose how much you wanted to "customize" a weapon, they decided to knock us down a few more notches. Any slices of more than 25% customization require the use of a LOOTED tool. So now, not only am I a Slicer, but I have to be an Explorer and kill Krayt Dragons (no joke) to find a high-end loot component in its belly to slice my precicely balanced pistol. How a "delicate trigger assembly" could survive in the gizzard of a Krayt Dragon is beyond me.

Throughout all this, they have also managed to take the game's token "Crowd Controllers" after the fabled Combat Upgrade and strip them of all but really 1 useful special for controlling MOBs, all at the request of another player community, the Jedi.

That brings me to another thing. How many Jedi were there after Star Wars, Episode 4: A New Hope? The answer; four. Luke Skywalker, Yoda, Darth Vader, The Emperor - the rest (if there were any) were all in hiding, as exposing themselves meant Darth Vader would come to kill them. SWG takes place during this time period, and how many Jedi are there? More than there are Smugglers, or any other non-Jedi profession (excluding Bounty Hunters, but at least they can hunt the Jedi...).

Add all that, and the fact that there are still no smuggling missions, or reprocussions for carrying/making/selling spices or sliced/slicing weapons, and you have one ticked-off community.

Almost 50% of the long-time smugglers who have waited over a year for some love have now quit. Myself included. So, you may be wondering why I am writing you. To be blunt, all attempts to get answers to our questions have gone ignored, and a number of member in our community have been banned for being persistent. We have even had a member of the community call Sony Online Entertainment and ask directly, to which was responded with vulgar language and a dial tone.

We have tried everything to get some answers, all has failed. Thus, this is our last resort. If the media can't get answers, then there is nothing left to do but quit.

If you have the time - you can visit the SWG Forums and read any profession's forum to see the extent of the damage done to the game.

Lastly, thank you for your time. Even if nothing can be done, your reply would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers,

- Rich R.

heh best thing we can all do is quit. In all honesty, if the press goes bad, then soe will just make jedi easier to get in order to pull in the casual demographic. In reality the only way to show our oppinion and be heard is quit. Honestly this is a money farm for soe. as long as they keep 100000 subscribers they gross around a mil a month( factor in the number of players on stations pass etc). 12 mil a year in free cash, who wouldnt coddle people to take that. Unless the subscribers drop below 50k, then SOE wont care

I don't think any of the gaming mags care what's going on in a "small scale RPG" (in the eyes of the entire industry, bear in mind).

Best tactic is to just hit up user review sites, especially if an expansion is going live. Gamerankings.org is one of my favorites, but I would alsopost an opinion to the vendors:ebgames, gamespot, etc. That's where it hurts. If the vendorsdon't resell the games, they're not going to stock them, and if they're not stocking them, there's no profit being made by the publisher. Thatresults in effective action, namely reviews and people getting fired (or in some cases, even entire propriatary/branch companies being shut down, a la Ion Storm).

It kind of sucks to get people fired (because usually their work lives are made into a living hell before that happens), and it takes a long time to see things go into effect, but that's how capitalism works in the software industry.

When SWG came out, the EQ1 vets posted reviews and basically warned the populace of the evils of SOE. As it turns out, they were right in basically every criticism they gave. So now, I'll add to those voices.

there silence regaurding +critical+ slice is really making me wonder...

-Was it a mistake? Did they just forgot to code it in?

-Or did they fear+critical+might upset a certain(delicate) group to much?

Which make me wonder about smuggler content if they went through with it- Ifear we'll just be running delivery missions in our own little worlds. You read one NPCmission, you've read them all... So their solution is to do nothing? I dont know. I'll just forget about it and play some Planetside I guess.

No I think I'll blow up some blacksun first.

well working in the field of TV and film just recently myself and a couple of friends have put togather a pilot episode for a films and games show. Something that we feel people like ourselves would wanna watch. Enough of the poodoo on TV that has no ballz to say it how it is.

One section i have come up with is an MMO section. LOL this is the good bit. In said section every week i am going to have a Galaxies bit. Something that not only informs people about new updates and expansions BUT also the concerns of the player base.

Bearing in mind this is a pilot but hpefuly if it gets picked up this will be a regualr section. So dont worry my brethen i will make sure our voices are heard (and my arse probably sued) but if thats the price then i'll pay it

I just want to set the record straight of what I am trying to accomplish by writing these letters.

I am NOT trying to change the universe. I AM tryingto get answers.

We have not been able to get any answers whatsoever from anyone we have asked, thus, why not approach the media.

IGN was a logical choice because of the Bounty Hunter questions they asked Lucas Arts back on June 21st (i think thats the date). Considering they were able to get at least some info, its a good place to start.

Incase any of you haven't read that interview - you should be able to see the link in your Launcher, before you click PLAY tonight - read it.

A lot of the answers are ambiguous, I'll admit that, but others were not. They mentionned that player bounties were in the works (in other words, 'Soon') as well as mentionning a lot of the changes we just saw implemented in this publish.

I hope I can inspire some of you to write similar letters - and don't worry about writing to people I, or someone else has already written to, because the more that write - the sooner they will respond to someone.

Good luck all.
