Thread: Those Devs really hate Neutrals

I didn't know where else to post this. I didn't think it would go over too well on my server forums...

Alright, here's a few quotes from the Stratics HoC chat.

Brekkee - *Corben* Question: Could you please elaborate on the role of Neutral factions in the GCW?
Lord_Pall - Neutrals are just that, civilians. They aren’t part of the gcw conflict, but they have to face the consequences. With the actual gcw changes we’re making it relatively easy to join a faction without a huge amount of risk. We want to encourage you to pick a side.
Lord_Pall - And honestly, if you pick a side because you’re hassled by a rebel trooper, or you witness a smuggler cut down by stormtroopers and you want to stop that activities, then the gcw system has succeeded.

Lord_Pall - If we can make the gcw system important enough to players that they feel obligated to choose a side to change the world around them, then we’re successful.
Lord_Pall - So in the end, if we do our job right, nobody will be neutral ?
Lord_Pall -

Brekkee - *Big-Rug* How does the Development Team think the new GCW changes will effect guilds/cities that accept multi-factioned members?
Lord_Pall - Once again.. We're trying to make the gcw more important.
Lord_Pall - With this change, the world around you, relationships that you've formed will potentially change.
Lord_Pall - Sure you can go on-leave to go adventuring, but at the end of the day you're involved in a war
Lord_Pall - You can have a multi factional guild and player city, but you need to understand that the dynamics of your relationships have changed.
Tyrant - Time to recruit them to your side is my advice. Make them see the error of their Rebel (or Imperial) ways!
Lord_Pall - brother against brother if you can't.
Tyrant - It is a war people! The worst kind of war, a civil war.
Tyrant - But "on leave" was made to allow for this possibility.

Brekkee - *RogueSlayer* I have not seen mention of Neutral (civillian) armor for the CURB. Is that going to be the armor that is in game now or are there also new desighns for that as well?
Tyrant - All the non-factional armors we have can be used by Civilians. New designs are not really planned at this point.
Lord_Pall - Pick a side!
Tyrant - Now Now...
Lord_Pall -
Tyrant - Not everyone needs to be in the GCW
Tyrant - Though we think it is more fun

Now, I understand all the "This is a war!", "It's StarWARS Galaxies" stuff, but I don't care. In other games I've played I've been able to get feelings for one faction or the other. I was able to get myself into a mood so I had extreme loyalty for one side or another. Not in SWG though. I could say "Well the Rebels kicked me out of my home" (which they did on my server), but that doesn't mean anything, just that I want to kill Rebels. "Well the Empire are evil people who do evil things". Alright, so I want to kill Imperials also... *looks around*

I've been in both factions, and I could never stay for long. I see all my fellow faction members running around, I see the purple names, and I just want to kill every one of them. I get this sick feeling after being in a faction for a couple days, and I have to quit it. It's true, really. I know that the Underworld publish/expansion might (hopefully) let me attack both sides when Overt, but I know that's a long ways away.

So, to Lord_Pall, Tyrant, Pex, and all the other Devs, NO, I will NOT join a side in YOUR CIVIL WAR!

Another thing that really bothers me is that stuff about the multi-factioned PAs. Let's look at what Lord_Pall said...

Lord_Pall - With this change, the world around you, relationships that you've formed will potentially change.

So basically he's saying "You're going to have to kill some of your friends, and that will cause tension, and eventually they wont be your friend anymore". Uh... The friends I have in SWG are my best friends. I'm not going to kill them just because I'm "playing my character". The people who do this I picture are the people who have the best of everything and they run around killing everybody in sight, and then say "PWND BIZZATCH!" Well, maybe that's the kind of game the Devs want this to be...

I had more on my mind but I can't think of it right now. Let me know what you guys think. Again, I posted this here cause I didn't think it would go over well on my server forum, and I figure a lot of Smugglers like to stay Neutral.

Well ever since they brought in neutral police factions, the "it's war" argument has little to no merit with me.

One more thing, this game was planned and released under the guise of being dynamic enough that you could play who and how you wanted. You could be your OWN character in the Star Wars galaxy. It' blatently apparent that now they want you to do that as long as you conform to their standards.

I have one final not that the devs need to figure out real soon:

IF I WANTED TO PLAY BATTLEFIELDS, I WOULD.

This game, like the movies and EU, should be about more than just war and combat. When it comes to the war dynamic, they can't even get that right either. The Alliance is a guerilla force. Heck, the people who took over planets after the fall of the Emperor were the people, not the Rebels, as they rose up against the oppression.

It's bad enough they do not realise these things, but it really gets me going when they continue to respond to a large portion of the player base with dismissive answers. Their argument no longer has merit, so it's time to find a new one.

I find it rather annoying that they constantly claim the GCW is so much fun they think if they push us hard enough in that direction we'll enjoy it.

I've always found my way to what I consider 'fun' all by myself without be coerced into it...

Hey one star bandit, get some cajones and tell us what's so wrong with the posts! They're valid concerns from players whose opinions and concerns are just as important as yours. I'm giving 5 stars where I can here to help balance things.

Just say something if you disagree so much. At least then there's the chance we may see things from your perspective.

You know I think the whole wanting to pit friend against friend thing pretty disturbing. Putting aside what such a desire on the part of the devs means about them and their particular psychological pathologies, it ruins the game, I think. One of the key aspect that makes MMORP's fun is the friends you make. Now the devs say they want to break those friendships? That's silly and stupid. It looks like they somehow equate animosity with fun. I also think their whole attitude of forcing the community in a particular direction is counterproductive and detrimental to building a sense of community. I have friends who are imps and friends who are rebel. I've been rebel in the past, but I'm not really into this because I want to fight a war. It seems to me what the devs are really saying is PvE is on its way out and we are going to force everyone to PvP, which I thought, was something they promised never to do, and in the past had worked to make sure people who don't want to be forced to PvP don't have to.

I wonder when this changed. I wonder when they decided to start plans to force us all to PvP, which is essentially what they are saying. Furthermore, I'm a smuggler and hopefully this will actually mean something someday, so I want to be able to work both sides. It seems to me the essence of the SMuggler is they play both sides. We are only in it for ourselves and the money, right?

I don't know which is more disturbing, there plans to force PvP on everyone or their seemingly getting off on forcing us to do so. I can't help but think they are playing some metagame of Black and White with us and we aren't customers they are trying to provide entertainment for, but little toys they play with for thier own enjoyment. Of course, it's easy to come to this conclusion as a long time smuggler, for it has been clear they think very little of us, but it looks like this darkside of the devs has won over the whole of them and the new order is something we will have to obey.

It's no longer a game for us to play...it's a game for them to play and we are the toys.

I've never felt more like cancelling my account than ever...but there still is that carrot called the revamp right in front of me...

I was juest looking at the back of the SWg box. One part says "Choose your own path". Now to me that means you can do what YOU want, you might not want to choose reb or imp. Now it seems that the devs WANT us to choose a side. Is everyone in the SW universe a either a reb or imp? No they aren't. The underworld, which we are supposed to be a part of, cared for themselves. They couldn't care who won, as long as the made creds, they were happy.

But they made the neutral faction a possibility, so they need to work it out in the existing framework.

I thought that was the whole reason they're renaming "neutral" to "civilian" - to make it clear that not choosing a side means that you're considered to be an Imperial citizen, since the Empire rules the galaxy.

In response to the earlier posts about pushing people into PvP - it looks to me like these GCW changes are going out of their way to avoid forced PvP (unless I've misread it, you're never in PvP unless you're a Jedi or choose to go Spec-Ops/overt - no more TEFs, and no more overtness from scans). The planetary control system that's going incould probablylead to conflicts of interest between people of opposing factions - maybe that's what those interview quotes are getting at?

*sets up sniper post in the tree line of the thread...waiting....hunting...the one star monkey.*

Ok so here is my point of view on this:

As a rebel

1. It is a war and people should pick sides this fits with the time line of the game, the movie the books, etc. Sorry but the Dev's are on the right track with this.

2. Neutrals have no part in the war because they are neutral, you tree huggin hippies (jk)

3. you can still trade, hunt, yadda, yadda, yadda with your friends whenever you want.

4. This game needs some excitement

As a Smuggler

1. we need a crime faction it's just that simple, I have no idea how it would work or affect the GCW but we need one.

2. While I wish we could go back and forth and work for who ever we want it will never happen, you think the FD abuse is bad think about the dabbler abuse if we could flip flop between factions. Again I wish we could but it will never happen.

In closing the GCW is and should be the main focus of this time line and I'm glad they are putting it at the forefront of the game.

Just my 2cents /shrug

Very good point.

When I saw that part of the chat, I thought "Oooh geez, THAT will create an uproar on the board".
But you know, they can say in threads and chat "It's WAR! Pick a side!" all they want, but in the end of the day they can't force friends to fight each other if they don't want to. They talked about wanting more peoples involved with the GCW, but no talk of removing neutrals. So really, what do that chat change? Nothing, it just reinfored the "we think picking a side is funnier" feeling they already created on the board since the first GCW thread. So they are being all "GCW will be great, you will see!" sure, but that not prevent anyone from being neutral.

They are maing GCW related changes, so I think it is normal they are focussing on the GCW. That do not mean there won't be any other faction ever or that neutrals won't ever have something to do in the game.

On the GCW, TEF Changes, and General Star Wars Galaxies Gameplay

I know this has been a very "heated" topic lately, but I wanted to try to present this from another perspective to try to help everyone understand each other (meaning I have some difficulty understanding the side some have taken, just as I think some have misunderstood the thought process I have sided with).

  1. "SOE apparently hates Neutrals and wants all PvP"

Personally, I think this is a somewhat extreme argument that is being used "out of context" for the actual debate. The choice remains to be Neutral. Nothing has changed in that respect. The only thing that has changed is that Rebels and Imperials are more divided, which I would think would be a great thing given that they are, at least in evrything that I have seen and read, enemies.

I realize that much of the concern lies in the "limitation" of Civilians being able to do some of the things they were able to do with mixed hunting groups, and I have no doubt that it will take some "getting used to." But this, by no means whatsoever, seems to be pushing someone into PvP (at least not in any way that I can discern).

It also stands to reason that the first changes would be to Imperials and Rebels, as the GCW is an integral part of Star Wars, and those two factions are the ones involved. I sincerely doubt that SOE "hates" Neutrals, but merely chose to focus on Rebels and Imperials first (wouldn't make much sense to me to be making GCW changes for Neutrals only at first, and then going back and adding in Imperials and Rebels when adequate developement time allowed, just my thoughts though).

  2. "But if they do not have time to do it now then they should wait until they do have time"

I can understand this sentiment completely, and even would have supported it if you asked me around a year ago. However, I think this mentality is what has caused us to be delayed on so many things in the past. This one, I am certain, will come down to each individual person's preference, so I'm not certain there is really anything more to say here.

Please remember that these are strictly my opinions, I just wanted to present something from a slightly different perspective, as I think a lot of perceptions are skewed slightly due to many different things. I could easily take this further if anyone doesn't quite understand what I am trying to say, or has any questions (after all, I'm a little out of it today, so no clue if I even got the point across the way I wanted to )

Although I agree the initial argument is a bit harsh, it has a point. That point being two things:

1. It's very possible to implement an additional layer to the changes being made. I never asked to be a Stormtrooper, but as long as they're acting as an authority, there should be a BETTER level of interaction. In this case, what was a step forward for the factions was a step backwards for those who wish to remain neutral or even play boths sides against each other were put into an orphan category. To really step things up, and provide better incentive for neutrals to either join a faction or even face consequences for their actions, they should have included a faction loss when failing a scan. That faction obviously looks down upon you for doing the things you do. I think this applies to the "police" factions more than anything (which I'll get to in a second). The GCW is an important part of the game, maybe (yes maybe) even the most important part, but that doesn't mean you should leave everyone else out in the cold when they could easily have a place in the systems being put in.

2. When GCW changes were first put out, I was angry. My feeling were a result of the opinion outlined above. I was told by Tyrant himself that "it's a war, pick a side". Although I find the logic flawed, at least it was a semi valid argument. Then part 3 rolled out. Any argument that "it's a war, pick a side" goes out the window as soon as you start including third party/neutral factions. They are creating interaction with NPCs outside of the GCW, so why not create it for all? Why not implement a "police" faction loss when you fail a scan so that eventually the "law breakers" will be recognised as such? I have two possible options for why.

a. The don't care about neutrals. I don't think it's the reason, but it is a possibility.

b. They want to force the players into the 2 factions to get content so they have less to work on. Working on content for two groups is a lot easier than working on it for 3. This also allows them to put the players off for another period of time until they feel like investing some time in implementing features that were advertised at launch!

It's a hard pill to swallow, but I will not be blinded by faith. Actions speak louder than words, and at this point I've seen little action to make me believe that the powers that be have really changed their tune. I will find a way to work within the new system and attempt to maintain the character that I've developed, but there needs to come a day, and soon, that SOE realises that they cannot continue to ignore a large portion of the player base, regardless of what the portion is. They've done it in the past, and they're doing it now. Patience is warranted, but haste and effort is as well. When valid and easily implementable features can go into publishes to include more players, it needs to be in there.

I'd like to close with one final question:

When didmore content for neutral NPCs than for neutral players become acceptable?
