I'm going to become a shipwright, and I read that for level 9, you need 9 level 9 items.. and for level 3, you need 3, etc. What I want to know is, do you get 3 chances at the firespray part if you use 3 parts? also do you get 3 items back? This has me really confused Thanks in advanced!

Every RE is a single chance, no matter the RE level.

Every RE produces 1 final part (with the best stats of the parts you used ).

Still not quite grasping it.. basically if you RE a level 3 one, using 3 parts you get 1 try at a firespary and 1 item back, correct? If so then that really stinks, because thats alot less tries at firespray frag

Yep. 1 item back, and 1 "roll of the dice" for a firespray part.

Which means if you're going after firespray parts, you want level 1 or 2 parts. They're common, and cheaper to try and buy to RE.

to answer the other question, when you RE, you get one piece of equipment with the best stats taken from all the parts you put in. When REing items for use (not just for KSE lotto) its best to get them with a variety of stats (one with low mass, another with low reactor drain, etc) The best equipment in the game is reverse engineered, for the simple reason that its like being able to experiment on every single stat at the same time.
