I personally sold 700k steel for 10 cpu to a new shipwright yesterday. I think that's way too high of a price though. I was planning on holding onto the steel for myself though, but at 10 cpu, I couldn't resist.
There are still some resource vendors on my server who sell steel for 2 cpu. But even with 50 harvesters mining it, they sell out pretty quickly. On Shadowfire, 3-4 cpu is reasonable for grinding steel right now I think. But you can still find it for less if you go to one of the large, steady resource vendors. They like to keep their reputations up for offering goods at normal prices. You can still find inexpensive steel - you just have to have the time to look and the luck to be in the right place at the right time.
If you're selling, I'd say you could probably double your normal prices for steel and still be ok. Should all settle back down in a couple of weeks though.

I know everyone else has been searching for steel - my problem has been fiberplast.... heh - one of the few disadvantages of having architect stores...

You might try medical resource vendors for fiberplast. Whenever some fiberplast spawns under my Tattoine chemical harvesters, I always mine it (even bad quality), tack on another 1 cpu and put it on my med resource vendor. You may be able to find some grinding Tat fiberplast on med resource vendors pretty cheap. And most of the shipwrights won't check a vendor listed as med components or med resources...

On Valcyn, base steel has been 6cpu for ages. Aluminum at 4cpu, or at 4-5cpu and inert petrochem at 2cpu.
There are some 2cpu vendors, but they're always out of stock unless you hit them within the 48 hours after they load up.
The interesting thing is that the above prices make the RESOURCE COST of a novice ship 22k... and we have shipwrights dumping blueprints at 3k. I've taken to buying them up and reselling. Heck, 2 days ago, I bought a Tier 3 ship for 6k!

Well, when you can find it, it's edged upward from what it had been in the previous months.. it was running around 2.25-3.00 cpu, but I now see 4-8 cpu. More often than not, up toward that high end. I won't buy it at those prices though, and invested my mone in about 20 BER 13 heavy mineral harvestors instead. Between my characters, and my girlfriend, I was able to plop down 34 minerla harvestors this morning, and I'll be able to do that on a weekly basis now. So I should be able to pull in, in excess of 3mil steel per shift.
If you have the ability to mine your own, do it! It's much easier than competeing with everyone else who only buy their resources. Cheaper on you, and ultimately cheaper on your customers.

Nada. I saved all my steel, ore, aluminum, and chems when I dropped architect. Yar.

I started stocking the basic materials I thought would be needed about 3 months ago. Running 10 heavies 24/7. I saved up 2.5 mil steel, 1.5 mil aluminum, 1.5mil copper, 5 mil ore. I didn't know what else to go after that so I just pulled up random resources and when it came time to grind I still needed all the fiberplast and inert petro. So finding that wasn't too hard.

I mine my own and wouldn't pay more than 2 cpu (because I mine my own)--I pay a variety of people for the use of their lots; essentially I set them up as dynamicminers for me.

I've always wondered how people handle "lot trades" like this. So you set a harvestor on a spot, and it never moves? You change what it's harvesting on a spawn by spawn basis correct? Even when you're on a crummy spot?

Yep. I actually do this with my own harvesters. It might leave you with a few days of 10-12% of some crap stuff, but I've got them right outside my shop so collecting the resources if a 2 minute job instead of a long drive.

Right. And if you're on a really crummy spot, you just don't harvest (don't waste the energy).
Most lot trades operate on the philosophy that the person you're trading with will never need to log back in to your server. So the harvesters can't move. You just supply the harvesters, have the other person create a toon on your server and place the harvesters, then make you admin (and name them if you want). Then they log off and never log back on with that toon. You do the same for them. You run a risk that they'll log back in and steal your harvesters (and the stuff in them), but most people won't do this, and it's an acceptable risk.
I personally have 5 lot trades, on 4 planets. Makes for more work running to 4 planets to harvest my stuff though. But it gives me the opportunity to harvest more specialized stuff, like Tat fiberplast, Lok wild wheat, Talus water, Dant berries, all for docs. So I make sure that I have chem harvesters on Tat, flora on Lok and Dant, and water harvesters on Talus. I think of the 50 harvesters I have set up, 20 are mineral, 10 chem, 8 gas (is too many), 8 flora, and 4 water. Then I have another 10 mineral, gas, flora, chem, and fusion harvesters for my own use. I can only use 10 of them at a time though, and use them to mine the best available resource (or fusion if nothing else is good). Other people prefer to have them all in 1 spot so they save time while tending the harvesters. Really isn't a bad idea...

I'm having trouble with steel, fiberplast and inert petrochemical on Naritus. The idea to check medical resource vendors for fiberplast is a good one though.
