They do decay much like armor in ground combat. Armor decays the most rapidly it will lose 10% of its value every time its destroyed (meaning knocked out not the whole ship destroyed).

Someone please correct me if I am wrong. Ships do not decay, and are unable to be destroyed? Whats the point?
It seems as though the only way to make money as a shipwright is to craft out components. The components do decay and get destroyed after a while but the actual ship does not. I need to ask myself why should I continue to be a shipwright when the loot that drops in space is far superior to the components I am crafting (not all the loot of course, but a majority of it).
I'm thinking if this is in fact the case maybe the devs should make ships like speeders, only maybe at a slower decay rate.
Please let me know if I am correct on this matter about the ships not being able to be lost in space. I am not looking for a flame so please don't post if you are going to flame.

Ships will decay, every time you get exploded, the hitpoints go down. A friend of mine's tier 2 ship got down to 75 hitpoints, lol.

Componants are never destroyed either, they use the same decay system as chassis as far as Im aware, ie, they always decay by 10% of the current total, meaning they can NEVER reach 0%. The advantage is you dont lose power to everything in a single shot once you're armour goes down.
In PvP it doesnt matter much because combat is very fas(as it should be), and so you will most likely see people using their looted and RE'd "uber" componants, even if they're down to something silly like 10ap/10hp. In PvE however, having that extra couple of hundred hp in your chassis and in each componant can be the difference between makling an in-system hyper jump for repairs and being killed and failing your mission, and as people wont want to chance their "uber" loot loosing hp to an NPC, they'll be using crafted componants, ie, what you make.
Stop trying to get everything nerfed, some Shipwrights will not be satisfied until they extract every last drop of blood from the drained corpses of pilots, and the community at large needs to do something about that minority before they get us a bad name.

I am by no means trying to get something nerfed. I was just stating my opinion. If I wanted a nerf I would have said something along the lines of maybe ships and their components should be destroyed to 0% condition and unrepairable when hit once.

No where near armor man.
Armor when the overall % quality is below 50% it starts to loose effectiveness. 90% gots down to 85% and down and down....
Space ships and Space component quality remains constant, no mater what. Also repairs on ground stuff hasa chance of destroying the item.
How manypeices of armor have you bought in a 1 month period? Probly 5 ish, a part of armor gets to low level and then you repair it and it blows up so you buy another part.
How many lvl 9 components have you bought? Only that initial set.
