So, I decided to try space mining today. I did the quest, and got my beginner mining laser and cargo hold. Then I grabbed the mission to mine 250 units and launched into space. I headed for the neareset asteroid and start blasting away... and blasting and blasting and blasting... I fired the mining laser for 5 minutes straight and no meduim chuncks broke off.
Getting frustrated, I moved to the next nearest astroid. I had more luck, I got three or four meduim chunks to spawn before they stopped breaking off. Moved to the third astroid which was enough to get the job done.
I flew around the galaxy trying to save enough resources to make a new cargo hold and mining laser. It was frustarting like before, find an astroid, either no medium chunks would break off or a few would then no more would spawn. And then, I got to an astroid in the naboo system. I broke off about 3 chucks, but they headed right for the edge of the map and they just hung there. I fired on them until they poofed, but they wouldn't break into small chunks. After the 3 or so meduim chunks, no more broke off from the large astroid. Then I flew 14km but firing on that one didn't create any medium chuncks. Grrr.
After that, I exited the game in disguist. Is space mining really supposed to be like this or is this yet another example of poor quality in SWG?

The asteroid was "empty", you need to shoot it until it despawns and a new one spawns, this is usually fast with "real" mining gear (2x Mark III Mininglasers for example) but the Mark I mininglaser from the first quest is quite weak so it can take a while.

What Darmok said. It took me a while to figure that out at first too. But yes, you're right, it is buggy as hell.

/examine the asteroid, it will show you the "HP" remaining...blast it til it poofs (reaches 0)
I have come acrossa couple thoughthat still had 1/2 its condition left and would not break. Even with a MKIII Laser it'd take a while to beat it down. Just move to the next.
