I've been thinking about them for a while now, and after some comparisons to lower-level shields and armor, it is my professional opinion that they stink. Here's some stats:
Level 1 armor: 280 HP
Level 3: 640
Level 5: 1175
Level 7: 1870
Level 9: 2625
Level 1 shields: 296/296 HP front/back, 2.00 recharge
Level 3: 685, 4.53 recharge
Level 5: 1280, 8.13 recharge
Level 7: 1875, 11.93 recharge
Level 9: 2150, 15 recharge
A curious result of this comparison: level 9 shields have the worst jump in HP of anything on this list! You gain more protection going from level 1 to level 3 than you do going from 7 to 9. And for an item that vaults in mass from 17K to 43K.
It's possible they kept level 9 shields at this impotent level due to game balance, because anything better would be too powerful in the hands of players, but clearly this isn't the case when everyone gets a much better shield by the time they complete tier 4 (2400 HP, 11.83 recharge, 43K mass--REable to 2550 HP, 16.5+ recharge, 27K- mass). I'd like to hear any other opinions on the matter and to suggest that level 9 shields be added to our list of issues as an underpowered item. It's a real pain in the ass to pour 7500 resources into an item that just isn't very good.

Every single selfcrafted item from a master SW should be better than a looted one.
I still have to disappoint my customers, when they ask me for capacitators or boosters.
That definetaly sucks from the dev here.
But to get back on topic. If Level 9 shields should be higher, than Level 9 weapons also should be. This way you can keep the balance.
cheers

Comparison from 1-3 shields and 7-9 is not complete without considering the re-gen...so 7-9 is a considerable improvement from 1-3 (re-gen is dynamic - therefore IMO a more relevant stat) Again, to compare with an exceptional loot and RE combo, which are,if not unique to each pilot are exceedingly rare, is inaccurate. Pilots will be reluctant to overcharge exceptional looted components whereas crafted components will be abused consistently. Mass saving on RE'd components make them ideal for low mass attack craft, however crafted components can be effectively used in larger ships without undue penalty - reactor drain is a more importatnt than mass on YT's n Decimators yet you show no consideration for it. All in all crafted shields are viable components.
ps your stats look a little low on quoted shields so that won't be helping u either.

I should clarify that my level 7 shields have 2 experiment points in recharge and the other 8 split between front/back HP. Level 9s done in this way would have 14.05 recharge and 2205 HP front/back. This is a gain of 330 HP and 2.12 regen from level 7 to level 9--in other words, less gain in every single way than you get going from level 1 to level 3. The specifics of the numbers aren't so important as the clear case that the jump from 7 to 9 is a clear exception to the tendencies of every other shield or piece of armor.
The comparison to the reward shield is only for the purposes of showing that level 9 shields can't be as bad as they are to satisfy balance issues when everyone is handed out a much better shield in the normal pilot progression. Though I do find it dumb the reward shield will pretty much be the best shield you're ever going to find (barring taking a couple months to store up the exceptional level 10s and REing them), whether that's for a medium fighter, a heavy fighter, or a YT-1300. This is, of course, part of the reason multiplayer ships are so ineffective.
Most crafted shields are viable components. But level 9 shields just aren't very good, and IF they're "viable," it's only in the sense that they are somewhat better than level 7s for those pilots too lazy to swap their reward shield from their Krayt to their YT. If you don't see a problem with them, that's cool, capacitors and a couple other things are still way bigger issues than this. But in my opinion, level 9 shields aren't currently operating at the levels they're supposed to reach, and that observation should at least be on our radar.

i agree completely, high level shileds need to be much more effective, and this is coming from an awing pilot who would never use one.
its crazy that my little awing mounts a 1900f/b shield when the best a bwing can hope for is 2500. if the shields are gonna have twice the mass, they should be twice as powerful.

I don't have problems with the a-wing having 1900 while the b-wing only having 2500 as much as I do that the best a nova/YT/deci can hope for is 2500...

That would ruin alot of the fun for pilots. The fun of loot is that you might get something super. Take that away, and alot of the reason to hunt in space is lost.
