I've read the FAQ and followed the links from Red-Dwarf's post on shipwright, and stumbled into a discrepancy as to just how many of each resource I'll need to get to Master. I've looked at the numbers carefully and realized that somewhere along the line I've misunderstood what is being said.
Right now I'm at 2-2-2-2 and as I understand it, I need to make 13 Level 2 chassis for each box in the 3-3-3-3 range, for a total of 52. Then I need to make40 Level 3 chassis for 4-4-4-4, and finally 55 Level 4 to Master.
Another post said that for total resources from Noviceto Master I would need about 2.2 million Steel, about 1.8 million Ore, and some 500-800k each of Aluminum, Inert Petrol, Iron, and Fiberplast. It's at this point my calculations veer off from the posts here. After all those I've used to get where I am, my calculations show that I need to collect almost 3.4 million more steel. Thus my concern as to what I've missed along the way.
Would someone please explain to this confused crafter where I'm wrong?
Thanks.

Don't fill each Tier completely. Just grind up chassis and than use Tier4 chassis to complete the rest of the boxes.. goes much faster.
cheers

Ps. I know, that doesn't answer your question straight on.

Speed is a relative issue since I've got to go out and collect all my resources anyways. I'm looking for the best XP per build/resource ratio. If getting to and then building Tier 4 chassis is thebest way to go, then that's what I'll do.
Any suggestions or pointers are greatly appreciated.

I beleive that nearly all shipwright items have the same ratio. 1/4 XP per resource.

I wasn't being clear, and for that I apologize. However, using Excal's suggestion of making chassis to Tier 4 and going from there, the number of resources needed dropped significantly. Instead of needing 3.4 million Steel I was able to drop it to 1.5 million units, since I will be building Tier 4 ship chassisfor 20k XP per build. I didn't realize that you could work up a single line in Shipwright instead of having to complete all 4 boxes of each level as you do with Pilot.

Well, just off the top of my head, I get different numbers. Assuming you're doing your chassis in practice mode, I get that you'll need around 2.8 mill Steel and around 1.4 mill of each of the others in order to Master.

I would need that if I was starting from scratch. However I'm at 2-2-2-2 right now, so it breaks down to:
13 Tier 2 chassis: 156k steel, 78k Ore, 39k Aluminum, Inert Petrochem, Iron, Fiberplast (3-2-2-2)
10 Tier 3 chassis: 240k, 120k, 60k (x4) takes me to 4-2-2-2
At that point I will need 300k XP to get to 4-3-3-3, and then 450k to get to 4-4-4-4, and finally 200k to Master. At 20k each for a Tier 4 chassis, it's 37.5 which I rounded up to 38. At that point I would need: 1.216million Steel, 608k Ore, 304k Aluminum, Inert Petrochem, Iron, and Fiberplast. I could reduce it by 5% if I did the whole thing in practice mode I guess.
So I've got some gathering to do.

Ah, very nice. I went about it all the wrong way and am 1-3-3-2 currently and grinding Tier 1 chassis in practice mode. I guess it's not too late to change my grinding plans.

Yeah Shipwright works like any ground profession on that you can grind up one line and then use that to fill in the other boxes instead of the Pilot way where it's tier based
