the stats in all your resources should be as high in MA, OQ, SR, and UT as possible if you want the highest mass you can attain. Generally, you can get by with fairly low resources and still hit the 'average' for each ship when you're master shipwright (say 100k on an x-wing). Using high quality resources really doesn't increase it that much, somewhere around 1% I think. (so ~101k max for x-wing). There was a good post some time ago about theoretical max mass for each type of ship, might be useful for you.
To find the best current resources that are currently in shift for your chassis (or any shipwright part for that matter) check this little script I wrote out.

Since those 4 stats equally affect a chassis mass (25% each) go to the Resource page on your Options menu, and check mark those same 4 stats. The resources in your inventory will now have a number on them which is theaverage of those 4 stats . Now pull all your good steel from your storage and pick the stack with the highest number. Put the steel back in storage, now pull your Ore, then fiberplast, aluminum, inert petro....rinse/repeat.
This takes the guesswork out of figuring out which resource is better....it helped me in the construction of Equinox II, my 172700 mass Opressor (exceeding the mass of Equinox I by 1700). I can now sport my Level 10 blasters, level 10 engine, 3 missile launchers and a chaff dispenser.

Excellent tip, it's what I do too, but there's no need to pull the resources out of storage... I simply open the factory input hopper a 2nd time, and then all the stats show with the same average as you see in your inventory. The first time I open the hopper, I only see stats listed above the resource stacks that are the same as what I already have a chunk of in inventory.
