I'm surveying 4 and MAster Artisan away from specialising and I cannot make up my mind whether to go for Shipwright or Driod Engineer. What do you think is good and what is bad about shipwright (compared to other classes)?

Well we could use more DE on bria but gonna warn you its a tough grind on either profession. SW takes alot of resources and I mean ALOT. I have 4 mineral harvs and 3 chem harvs running and also have a resource contributor and it seems like its never enough.

Im gonna have to say, unless you have been saving Steel and other minerals for several months, I would not recomend going SW, even tho it took me 4 days to grind, i still spent little over 20 mill on the grind, and I even had 16 harvesters at my disposal. Its a very expansive grind, and I have not sold any one of my high mass, chasis yet.
Hopefully , tho, it will all pay off in the long run, with ROTW coming and new ships to build, we will be in demand again, at least for a short while.

Unless you get a good macro, grinding DE can be...tiresome.

Both profession boast high complexity in the variants of products they produce, which is something most crafters enjoy. Shipwright seems more refined, mainly because it's the newest crafting profession (DE could use a revamp in its experimentation effectiveness). But I love DE for two reasons: 1) There are not too many of us out there, and 2) DE is the most Star Warsy profession in the game, imho).

Hmm, both. But I would have to give up my part-time career of music and image design. And I'm not sure I can stand the thought of making another 75 personal mineral/chemical harvesters

I thought it was the personal wind power generator (can't recall the propper name) was the one that gave the best exp for grinding.

Wind genrator only if you do experimentation. If you don't it gives 25 exp. If you do experiment, with a few points a go so you get the complexity above 18, it gives 425 exp just like the personal chemical/mineral without experimentation. Or at least that's the case with me.

If you're tired of personal harvesters, just wait for what you'll be tired of with DE and SW......
Crafting professions are easier to master if you just sort of play around with them and build stuff for anyone who needs it, trying to sell everything you can at approximately market price on the bazaar. Otherwise, you're going to be bored stiff with hurting wrists.
Having ground / built myself to master shipwright / arch, I know of what I speak. Not so much with SW (although the standard way of mastering SW is definitely quite tough on the pocketbook - I'd say 10M rather than 20, but still a large chunk) as with arch or most other crafting classes, but still.... if you're bored with grinding, don't pick a big grind.
And I ground with bricks, btw. 200-300 walls by hand, I pwnz0r.
I haven't made a wall by hand in a month, though. One Brick- One Schematic,One Wall-One Schematic, 99 walls ouput.

Don't take Droid Engineer! It a crappy profession. I was became MDE a year ago and it didnt take me long to realize it was absolute useless. Noone wants to buy droids because they cant really do a lot. Only bounty hunters need a few arakyd etc. now and then. You might even get lucky to make a droid for the performers - that's it! Waste of time. Another crappy profession in SWG.

Pfft. Chalk that one up to impatience...
I love being a DE. It's not the most profitable, but I could care less. It's an entertaining and diverse profession and if I make credits doing it, cool.

Go Shipwright, they will be in demand for a few months again anyway, and if you get good at it and have great customer service interaction, you will succeed.
Droid Engineer is neat, but it won;t be anymore soon. It never made any money compared to other professions either. Over half of the DE modules do not work in the CU - they serve no purpose.
Other than combat droids which will actually be useful now, DE is almost pointless now.
Then again, Revamp version 6789 will be scheduled to happen sometime nn the next decade....
