I just started working down the Imperial piloting line and bought my first tie fighter and components to go in it. After adding all the basics (engine, weapon, capacitors, etc) I still have about 3k tons left for additional equipment. Can I use that extra tonnage for anything I want? Example: if I want better sheilding add an extra sheild component, faster weapon recharge add an extra capacitor, etc.

You can add anything you want to a certain extent. You can't have two capacitors or two engines, but you can upgrade your engines to the mark 2 or mark 3 stuff depending on your certification. The mark 2 and 3 stuffs weighs a lot more than the mark 1 stuff. I hope this helps. Good luck.

If you don't have them, you can add missiles and countermeasures.
