Recently I upgraded to lvl 7 component use. There is a big jump in mass. Some items perform a great deal better and wiegh much more but Reactor mass is way out of whack. Two lvl 5 reactorswould create way more power then a lvl 7 reactor and weight less also. I can get 14k of power out of a lvl 5 reactor but only 2k more power out of a lvl7 and it weighs more then twice as much. What kind of ineffeicient engineering is that? It defies all logic and probably attributes to most of the mass problems. For 2k more power that reactor should only weight 10-15% more then a lvl 5.
Also I think its a real valid argument from pilots that they should not have to all fly master lvl ships for PvP. Its this whole mass thing that makes this happen. As a privateer I am not even bothering with my tier 3 ship as its not an upgrade. I have no valid reason what so ever to use a Ixiyen, in fact a Dune Lizard would probably be the better choice over it. How in the world is it possible for a Ixiyen to use twice as much materials as a Kimo and have 20k less mass? Sheesh, this is the most stupid system ever divised and its like no thought went into it at all.
Can anyone say UNREALISTIC! Please, I know the devs aren't engineers in the practical sense but it doesn't take a rocket scientist to see these blaring flaws.

Thus the reason why most people will probably never use lvl7 or above reactors. There is so little benefit to using the higher reactors and such a loss in mass that it's basically useless. The only ship I'd probably use a high end reactor in would be the master lvl MP ships where mass is almost irrelevant at 500k mass. Other than that the rest of my equipment will probably be lvl5 gear for anything else. Only ones that might truely beneift would be weapons and engines, but most looted engines are better than crafted ones anyways.

Not every improvement in equipment certification means you are suddenly going to use those technologies - in fact most single player ships are often an odd mix of Mark 2-5 technologies mixing the best of all available products to fill up your mass appropriately.
Ultimately this does mean that the "large mass ships" (multiplayer especially) are the only ones able to "afford" running with a full compliment of Mark 5 technologies.. now if only the benefits of those techs went up as quickly as their masses.. =)

I made some mark 1-5 generators using the same resources for all, to see how they came out at different levels. Used overcharger, exerimented full on generator rate, leftover points were used on mass.
Mark I, power 12234, mass 1281
Mark II, power 13080, mass 3203
Mark III, power 14356, mass 8015
Mark IV, power 16387, mass 19988
Mark V, power 18961, mass 49848

The master level MP ships have 5 million mass.. not 500k.
Mass is irrelevant for MP ships.. currently impossible to use up 5 million mass with the existing slots.
Now if only they would let us stick two shields or two engines on or... /dreams

I would just like to see mass scale realistically with the effiecency of the items.
A reactor or example, that is only 15 percent more effective should not weight over twice as much.
Instead of adding mass to ships in TC, they should be fixing these way out of whack item mass.
This goes for all items, not just reactors. Just adding mass to the chassies is the cheap fix...
Give us realism please.
