Hopefully this displays alright for everyone's browsers... Take a look at this link.
So, I've been playing around with numbers in excel, because I've been thinking about upgrading weapons on my Dunelizard.
Just picked up the level 8 reward gun from Freelance Pilot, and I thought I'd run a comparison with my current set up. I haven't actually REd the weapon yet, so these are stats based on what it would RE to using the current level 8 guns I have.
Right now I'm using 2 crafted blasters (Thanksto Ecewe on Valcyn).
Am I missing something, or does the Shipwright win pretty convincingly? Looks like we're doing better by almost 2000 damage per second. Only issue is the capacitor energy drain.

So we don't use real HTML, hm? Ok, here then:

good job & thanks for sharing
, i was starting to favor the re'd level 8 guns, have one i just made with sub 4 refire, .68/.69 shield/armor and damage range of 2350-3900, but i couldn't get the mass low enough to still use 3 good guns in the x wing, i got it to 24k mass....looking at your numbers, it looks like i would give up alot to take away the 2 adv. blasters crafted plus one re'd level 6, to load this thing up. i'll have to play with it some more though, maybe try keeping the other re'd 6 and adding a super shield buster crafted heavy ion, i managed to get my exp. ones to .918 vs shield, haven't tried heavies yet

I'm afraid you are missing somthing. You can't compair 2 lev 7 guns to one lev 8 gun. Try comparing your two lev 7 guns to 2 REed lev 7 guns.
Crafted guns can outperform looted guns, but not good REed guns. Crafted guns can have very fast refire rates, which is nice for pvp, but that ups the capacitor drain per second (though as long as Weapon overload 3 remains bugged that's not much of a concern).
In anycase... you should try to make room for 2 lev 8 guns in that dunelizard... or at least 1 lev 8 and 1 lev 7.

A nice set of looted RE'd guns will outperform crafted ones in terms of DPS by a significant margin. They'll also weigh less, and drain far less reactor energy. Crafted guns do have some advantages--they're more customizable, can be made to fire faster or penetrate shields better, etc.--but in pure DPS, RE'd outclass them by a ways.
That said, I like the system pretty well. Good guns take a while to collect loot for, and in the meantime, pilots will want to use crafted ones. And even when a pilot's had months to compile the best looted guns he can loot, he'll still have the occasional incentive to purchase crafted guns. There's a lot of room for both pilots and shipwrights in such a system, which seems the ideal situation to me.

Well, yeah, on a Damage per Second comparison, the RE gun is probably going to win every time.
What most interested me was the mass-to-damage-per-second ratio. That ratio is going to be most important for the lower-mass ships (small fighters), because everyone else will have plenty of mass to shove in the really good RE guns.
I'm going to keep running the numbers, but so far it looks like Crafted wins out over RE in that regard. Crafted guns appear to pack more punch per mass point, at least for these preliminary calculations.

Well, here's a couple guns I've put together. I've since found parts to make better ones, but I think they'll still make for a good demonstration.
Level 7 RE'd Boltdriver:
12768 mass
1839 energy drain
1986.6-3071.6 damage
.630/.620 shields/armor
19.8 energy/shot
.310 refire
Level 6 RE'd:
8815 mass
2129 energy drain
1988.6-2650.1 damage
.680/.680 shields/armor
27.4 energy/shot
.380 refire
Crafted guns can't keep up with that. I don't really have a problem with that, personally, and I think it makes pilots' lives a lot more fun, but even at similar levels RE'd loot can have a significant advantage.

Ah yes, you're right. Its the refire that does it.
And even if REd weapons are better, it still takes a shipwright to put them together

That's true, and it also takes a significant amount of time to put a good RE'd gun together from loot. So while it's at times frustrating for me that I can't build guns that can keep up with the best stuff, I know there are an awful lot of pilots who depend on crafted components to get them through their squadrons. It's only the serious pilots who end up with these great guns, and if they're serious pilots, that means they're playing JTL a lot, possibly depending on us for missiles and chaff and parts when they burn through them. I like the balance pretty well.
