Thread: Trying for that certain look...

My Fellow Shipwrights -

I've gotten this questiona couple of times from customers, and I have recently been doinga lot of piloting with a Z-95 Headhunter myself. There is a certain kind of engine that is available - I will assume as loot - for the Headhunter that has a distinctly different appearance from the standard ones. On a standard engine set, the Z-95 looks like an X-Wing with its foils locked closed and fewer weapons, with a quartet of smaller engines sandwiched around the foils.

http://starwarsgalaxies.station.sony.com/expansions_ships_z95.jsp

However, there is another type of engine, a larger pair which bisect the foils, which has been seen in a lot of EU art/models and was shown in the early JTL screen shots.

http://starwarsgalaxies.station.sony.com/images/jtl/20040617005.jpg- to the lower right of the TIE Advanced

http://starwarsgalaxies.station.sony.com/images/space/screenShot0889.jpg- different angle, directly below the TIE Advanced in this shot

http://massassi.yavin4.com/sw_img/asgz95.htm- Very clear non-JTL shot, included here as reference

I was hoping to be able to provide this look upon request. Since I'm certainly not alone in this profession I was hoping to avoid the trial-and-error approach to tinker this look together... maybe someone else has already tried, and knows what looted engine type to use to achieve this look?

PS - Sorry about the lack of clicky-ness, but I am in a rush doing this post between tasks between tasks at work. And I figure a little cut and paste is not beyond most shipwrights. After all, we do a lot harder stuff on a day to day basis. LOL

I must admit I've only ever seen Z95s (or at least noticed them) with the 4 port engines.

I've seen different designs of booster, but all the engines I've looted seem similar in their inventory icon.

The reward engines use the second variant look, I know, but you'd be hard pressed to fit either in a Z-95 (or stock them on a regular basis). They may change the look in the same way on an X-Wing, though.

You have to load the engine into your ship to see if it changes anything, they all look the same in your inventory. I'd love to see a listing of what engines / boosters / etc are appearance changers... but as I do 98% of my flying as an Imp, I can't research that myself.

I think you might be right there, as I belive that they also alter the look of the engines of a Y-Wing. I had hopes that there was a craftable variation as well, but if there is it is probably of a high enough level that you'd run into the mass problems you mention above.

Guess I'll just have to try this the old fashioned way then... I had hoped to avoid all of that. Ah, well.

I just got the reward engine with my alt yesterday, and it did alter the engine on my dunelizard. Dual-engines baby!

I remember when working up rebel pilot initially that I had an Incom engine in the Y that altered the look, so I know it's not *only* reward engines that do it. I've been meaning to hook up a z95 best I can and see what I can do with 12k-ish mass, I'll keep an eye out for those huge honkin' engines. Definitely going to try to find an Incom one to test with too, just in case.

The Rebel reward engine IS an Incom engine.

no, i knew that, but i meant that it was an Incom engine that wasn't a reward engine. i thought the above posts were saying that only the reward engine would do the 'change'. sorry for the confusion, i've never been the greatest at expressing my thoughts coherently, heh.

Well, that is promising, anyway, and makes a degree of sense. Incom is said to be the manufacturer of the Z-95 and the X-Wing (see the StarWars.com databank if you're interested in more detail), and so placing those engines on an Incom product might be the rationale behind these being the source of the modification.

Interesting note on the Y-Wing, those engines were supposed to have been manufactured with plating running down the entire surface of them, but would get stripped by mechanics to allow easy access, resulting in the stock look of the Y-Wing that we know. The modified-look JTL Y-Wing engines are plated all the way down, as if they were freshly manufactured. That's a funny bit of trivia for the art team to have picked up on, but cool none the less.

I've *really* got to make time tonight to play around with this and see where I get.

yeah but the alternate y engine look also has the engine posts pointing in an upward and away diagnal (looks like the warp engines on the Enterprise to me) as well.

and to add to the posts from above, I as well have looted engines that use the alternate engine look so they are definately not only reward engines but they do SEEM to be rarer than the normal design ones. And you can only tell by equiping them.

Well, I'll take the dive and say any "Nubian" engine probably has the alternate graphic engine(at least all the ones I've looked at do).

Surronian A2.50 Grade Engine, level 3, appears to haveit, but I'm not afan of odd-level engines.

Well, I did not have one of each engine handy to try.

But I did get lucky.

If anyone else wants this look for a Z-95, the answer that worked for me was a Surronian A2 Grade engine. And it was something I had RE'd, and it had some respectable stats for a low end engine... not what I'd call a stupendous engine, but it has its merits.

And hey, I got that certain look. TY everyone for your help and suggestions, it was a good excuse to read up on the "history" of some of the stuff we build every day.
