Thread: Shipwright is a role-playing profession
I am actually in the shipwright business for role-play reasons. Money is so easy to get in this game no matter what you do just about. If your objective is to become the wealthiest AFK player on the server, then shipwright is not for you. In RL many people who deal in large specialty vehicles (such as agricultural equipment or commercial grade machinery) have a very slim profit margin. Many of the ones who survive in these industries are in the business because they really love it, not because of the profits.
From a role-play perspective, my character enjoys having the ability to build top-notch custom components (reverse engineering and high quality crafting). I also enjoy being the contact to build that dream ship for someone. I will have an ample supply of bombs and missiles for myself and my guildies. I do not do volume work and don’t even have a vendor. I was a great weaponsmith at one time on another server (never had a vendor) and for me it is about allot more than the credits. For me being a crafter is another opportunity to socialize. I would be happy regardless of most economic changes. I really think this is the way that shipwright was designed to be played.
With SW they put out a system that corrects previous design flaws by encouraging role play rather than making another slew of "I can make billions while AFK" power moguls.
Now these same moguls go into SW looking for more of the same and are upset that their exploits are not getting them where they thought they would. They are upset that they actually have to "play the game", be at the keyboard, and socialize. They don’t like the fact that SW is geared more towards role-play.
I think that I am playing my shipwright more like the developers originally planned for it to be played and that is why I am very happy and comfortable with my profession. I see some people crying about how they made 40 million one night and now they are just so distressed because last night they only made a million. It is these people who exploit the cross server lot trades, who are begging for factories so they can turn this into an AFK profession who are ruining the economy and their own game is backfiring on them.
The people who are bragging about pumping 40 million worth of components and starships out into the economy in a night are the same ones ruining the economy for a great number of other players. Ever heard of the theory of diminishing returns? It is people like this who ruin the game economy through exploits and then they come and whine on the boards that the economy it is broken.
If you are such a player, don’t expect to get any sympathy from me and I really doubt you will get much from the developers either. These "power moguls" are the same people who beg for nerfs to everyone else (risking ruining the game for thousands of other players) just so they can maximize the effectiveness of their greedy little exploits.
Don’t come into my game and try to have my game and everyone else's ruined because you want to win through AFK exploiting. I see so many people mindlessly grinding all the time already, and for what? To fit in? You really think that people are gonna like you because of what you have and what you own? I have tons of friends and spend most all of my time socializing but I am not UBER and never have been.
This is a game, it is meant to be fun. It is meant as a way to socialize and get out of reality. Please let those who understand this play in peace without trying to change the whole game to fit your ego at everyone else's expense.
As inspiration, I'm using aftermarket high performance auto parts companies (e.g. HKS). We'll see if I can't make a real life interest in a SWG profession, heh.
Since I'm Master I also take only customer orders. But those I make exactly as the customer wishes it.
But sadly there are customers out there, who orders compontens and when they want to pick them up, they are shocked of the prices I charge.
Happened today:
I got a tell from an earlier customer who orders two Mark 4 weapons. I asked him, how he wants them have. Which parts I shall take care off and which I can ignore (i.e. mass or energy consumption). At least, I made the weapons as he wished it. When he came to my shop to pick them up, he declined to do so. Too expensive he claimed.
Well. Not that I care. 20 Minutes later the Ion Cannon was sold for 75k.
two day before:
A customer /tells me (not literaly rewritten but the same sense) to craft him a reactor Mark2. He said what stats he was expecting from my crafting. I told him, that I will do my best (as always). The next tell of him was like 'but I won't buy it, if it is not good enough'! My answer was very dry. I said to him 'And I won't craft it when you are pushing me'.. The short term of this story is, he was very happy with the reactor and gave me an extra 10k tip to my price.
On the other hand.. an ace pilot enters my store and buys a Tier2 and Tier4 blueprint at once. The value.. 520k together. I really was surprised. He only told me, that the ships are good and have a very high mass.
Yes, as a shipwrighter one experience a lot each day. Funny and not so funny stories. But under the hand it makes fun.
cheers
