Thread: Starting from scratch. Need advice.

I'm starting a new SW character on a new server. My main char doesn't really have enough money to think about a x-server trade, so my new char is on his own. There are so many things I have taken for granted for so long, having vehicles, having a huge fleet of harvestors, that I can't remember what's its like to have nothing.

For starters, I suppose the first priority is to get credits so I can buy a vehicle and work up to the heavy harvestors I will need.

What would you do first if you had to start over?

I would suggest a medium mineral harvestor rather than a heavy, at least for newer players. Heavy harvestors eat through power and maintenence compard to the mediums, which are considerably more economical to run for cost per BER. Heavy harvestors are better if you're strained for lots, but if you're just beginning and your main concerns are credits and energy, use mediums. Steel is the most strained right now so concentrating on harvesting that would be best. Ore would be your second most wanted from shipwright, but it's not as easy to find high concentration spawns.

Kharn_JB, I think that discussing the merits of mediums vs heavies is probably off-topic here. I believe that mediums are a good stepping stone in the process of building up a mining business. If you want to talk about the relative merits let's take that discussion over to the Architect forum.

In any case, we've now handed out a bit of advice on how to get cash very early on (survey missions) and how to leverage that cash into something that will pay off in a sustained manner (resource mining). This should get you into a position where you can start working on shipwright in a few weeks and sustain it.

Good luck.

do the new player quest to get the retal vehical. once you have that, run a bunch of survey missions using the rental vehical (keep it out, you can only call it 5 times then it goes poof) until you can buy your own speeder. Speeders are very useful for saving time hunting down resource spawns and for doing resource survey missions which will likely be your bread and butter for credits in the beginning. If you're going to master artisan I suggest trying to find a nice polysteel copper spawn once you've got at least a few personal harvestors, as polysteel usually has high conductivity of 950+. Use this polysteel to make repair tools and tools, trying to experiment them up to 90+% (which requires you to have at least 4400 aritsan, and the +15 experimentation bonus for being human helps a ton with this). you can make a good amount of credits making and selling high quality tools on the bazaar.

If possible, try to find a PA that you would fit into and that would be willing to help you get set up with some stuff.

If I were starting from scratch and was targeting the shipwright profession I would spin up a resource mining business ASAP. Once I got a fleet of harvesters and some cash then I would start skimming some of the resources to grind up shipwright, leaving just enough to sell to meet operating expenses on the harvesters.

Here's something that I wrote up about how to do this quite awhile ago. There are some changes that I'd make (e.g., using the green droid quests) but all in all this is a very quick way to get yourself into a money-making resource business.

Make Money Fast!

First, I would take an Artisan as my starting profession.

I would look for a guild that aligns itself with my personal tastes. Getting involved with an established guild that will support your fledgling character is a must. Especially with the age of the game, it is possible to locate several strong, supportive and friendly PA's across all the galaxies.

Once in that guild, I would imagine they would provide fully stocked with Credits and Power Harvesters to which you could use to place after surveying for resources. I would focus on the engineering tree and take Shipwright as soon as possible. Then I would focus on shipwright.

You may want to complete Master Artisan in order to be able to whip up some relatively lower cost, resources-wise, but high profit swoops. As well as have the ability to place a few vendors.

You may wish to take a combat profession for defensive manuervers, either a ranged or melee would do, that depends upon what your secondary goals are.

Be good with the PA and things could progress for you quite quickly.

Thanks for the advice guys! I like the idea of survey missions(when did they put that in?) because I'll need survey XP to master Artisan. So the resource market is still ok? For my first char, I bought a fusion reactor and made a comfortable living selling power. Can you still do that, or has the reactives market tanked? The green droid give you a vehicle? that's cool.

I've never been much of a PA person, but maybe I'll give that a shot too.

Survey missions are the bomb. Identify one spot, then just make sure you get those same missions over and over again. I think you can make 3k-5k per trip using a rental vehicle takes maybe 5 minutes per trip.

Once you get to shipwright, start making paint and texture kits. No experimenting necessary, these should sell on the bazaar fairly well. They are selling off my vendors really well.

Getting into a PA is always a great idea. I am the only shipwright in my pa, and I would gladly give a new person a few million credits to help take the pressue off. Hand crafting, and reverse engineering are huge time sinks.

Actually, with shipwrights eating just about every mineral in sight, the resource market is booming right now. You should be able to raise the cash to get BER13 heavies very quickly. Once you have those cooking you can easily skim 70% of the resources you dig to your shipwright grinding and still pay all the bills for a long time.
