You either have to actually buy them from someone or go up in space and mine them. To start on the mining quest talk to Flash Harrison in the Big Tree on Kashyyyk.

If you have asteroid mining equipment and are a pilot, check out the Mining FAQ by Reddwarf in the stickies above. It will tell you all you need to know including what asteroids are located where.

You basically need a mining laser, a cargo hold and have the RotW expansion (if you don't have the expansion you can't mine).
Just go up, shoot the large targetable asteroids with the mining laser. An asteroid chunk will fly off, shoot this chunk and it will then break up into even smaller pieces. Then shoot the small pieces and they will go into your cargo hold.
You can then pull out the resources from the cargo hold when you are on the ground via the datapad.

ahh. misread.
well there is a list of what asteroids are where in that sticky.
But if you open up the map in space, it has the asteroids in that system listed there.

Sorry, thought the FAQ had a link to it. Must be in the pilot FAQ.
Iron Tatooine/Corella
Sulphuric Naboo
Organometalic Lok/ Kahyyk
Cyanomethanic Yavin 4
Carbonaceous Naboo
Petrochemical Yavin 4
Methane Danotoine/ Kashyyk
Silicaceous Corellia
Acidic Dantooine
Crystal Dathomir
Ice Endor
Obsidian Lok
Diamond Kessel
Hope that helps.

I tried for a couple hours or more to complete the quest that first gives you the Class I Mining Laser and Small Cargo Hold, but could not get that laser to break off ANY chunks from the Silicaceous Asteroids in the Talus system. It also would not work on Iron Asteroids there, so I took it to Naboo space and it broke off chunks from the Carbonaceous Asteroids and Sulfur Asteroids just fine.
Maybe Silicaceous and Iron are too hard of materials for that low-class Mining Laser? Sure is frustrating when you can't complete a quest because of it.
