He told me to put "this" comp in the RE fixer first, because he wants to keep this name on its new stuff.

Is it just for fun?

When you RE then the first component youput in the analysis tool is the one which will be the default name for the RE'd item.

It also happens for the physical appearance (the appearance on the ship and the blast type for guns).

Yeah. When it comes to RE'ing a component, be it a gun/engine/booster, I am very picky as to which goes into the CAT first. For guns, it might be the look or firing sound/graphic, engines and boosters for the look on the ship. As far as for keeping the name, I guess I never really worried much about that, since all my RE'd parts have special names.

a pilot just paid me 100k to re a level 7 gun yesterday. He requested that a specific gun be used first for the color and sound and appearance of the final weaponand I was happy to oblige. I then picked the best choices from the remaining weapons he had to maximize the results (ended up quite nice btw) When it came time to chose the name, I asked specificly "What do you want it named? I usually put my company name"..he replied that he did't care, name it what I liked. If a customer pays 100k and wants his part named "BFG XXX", then i'm happy to do so...but I also like it when they let me use my company name.

I always want something that is not the default name. Helps me to avoid selling the parts on accident. Maybe I should have my RE'd parts named "Don't sell this you idiot!!!".

I've tried naming most of my RE'd things, but it often says "that is a reserved name." What does that mean?

It means you won't be seeing any "Luke Skywalker" engines in the game...

Reserved names are characters in the EU(Extended Universe) or variations on said names, swear words and sometimes word that have swear words imbedded in them (ie: assault cannon, fLUKE sheilds) and/or any digits. However roman numerals are accepted IV, XII etc..
