Thread: Proposal: Shipwrights as Ship Engineers

Currently, all starship parts repair kits do the same job as most space stations repair facilities, and the stations charge one low price rate and is easy to use and find. Stations also repair everything in one click. This makes the purchase and use of a crafted repair kit a hassle.

Also, why buy a kit at all, when you could just repair the item at a station? (not everyone has a MP ship)

Here's my proposal that could change all that, and make more of an income and repeat business for Shipwrights...No more lack of business boredom

In a nutshell, using a crafted repair kit on a ship, will yield less decay that a space station. And, if a Shipwright of a sutible level (tier 1 SW with only tier 1 ships. master SW only on msater ships and below) uses the repair kit, the decay is even lesser than that.

This concept goes along the lines of:
- repair at station = 10 points decay on damaged part that is repaired (an aproximate number of decay average thatis currently on live, as an example)

- repair with repair kits =6-8 points decay (this is a new idea, and it would promote sales of kits from shipwrights, instead of space stations...Kits are now desirable)
- a shipwright makes the repair with a repair kit = 1-5 decay (SW can charge for services!, and having a SW in battle would be a huge plus!)

The end result of this might be along the lines of how Doctors are reguarded to PvP and PvE ground game players (by the way...they're always hanging about starports, should'nt "shipwrights" be the ones to do that, and Docsat the med center?).

Repair kits are easy to make in quantity, lower on resources, so prices can fluctuate due to services render of a repair. A lot of players ONLY use looted parts, they'll need these services as well, if not more! Shipwrights that hang around starports will have long lines awaiting quick repairs...and you can not only charge for the kit whatever you think is the market value at the time (is that composite armor that pilot is wearing? hmmm), but also charge for the service of doing the repair yourself!

To have a shipwright repair a ship, they would need to group with you, then you use the same Starship terminal. A new "repair" function is now possible. When pressed, you can select yourself, or anyone in your team, to repair the ship (not manage, mind you, just repair).

If SWG ever decides to do instanced ground or space hangers forplayer ships, this idea will be exciting as well! Imagine entering a hanger and seeing the players ship (more or less a 2d representation to save lag and rendering). You, as a shipwright, can then open up your toolbox and physicaly use the repair kits on the ship!

Anyway, some ideas to toss about. Shipwright should DO more than just craft! I use two Shipwrights, andthey're importantparts of my flight crew now. If only they could use their special skills more! Engineers woiuld be cool!

Additional ideas:

- Like smugglers, theres a chance of a repair being great, or just being mediocre, depending on the shipwrights level

- chassis patch kits. Will ONLY work when i shipwright uses it. If a shipwright can build that level of ship, he can try to repair it (chance of no effect as well). So a lvl 2 SW cant repair a lvl 4 ship. Make the chassis repair only lessen the damage, NOT remove it. Like, if a ship was 2000, suffered damage to be 1900, a shipwright, if the ship has not gotten repaired at a space station or flown again, might have a chance to reclaim 1 to 50 points back, to make it up to 1950, if very lucky...

- Fuzzy dice

All thoughts and questions are appreciated...

thanks for your time, SW's. I wouldn't be in space without you...and i really want you all to join us pilots there...

i agree, most ideas i have read in the sw forum could add a new exciting part to the proffesion, whats the odds now of a dev listening and adding some new stuff for the space route?

note , i really like the idea of a instanced space hanger for repairs, maybe a place for pilots to land in space to refill countermeasures and missles as well as new parts....ect

Well, all can help out with this idea, and make it heard, by dropping your current Shipwright Correspondant a note on this as a "wish list"

I don't see a huge problem with programming this. Artwork can be minimalized with static 2d like images for the hangers, and you can limit the space you can walk around your ship to perhaps 1 quarter view only.

Many video games give the illusion of walkable space by a good animated background, like almost all the scenes in PS2's final fantay series, and Resident evil. Static backgrounds with action spots.

And, none of the ideas seem game braking, exploitive, unbalanced, or unfair to anyone.

So, anyone else like to add suggestions to make theShipwright THE person you go to for staying healthy in space?

Master Artisan makes "All-Purpose Ship Repair Kit", MSW cannot (unless also artisan).

These are more desireable than item-specific repair kits... what do you propose, here?

My thoughts.

1) I would not want to be bugged constantly to repair others ships, besides, it runs the risk of having to trade the ship back and forth for the repair and there will always be a scammer out there.

2) Make the part specific kits 20-50% less repair damage than space stations.

3) Make the multi-purpose 80-90% less on repair damage.

4) Part of #2, make the percentage experimental. So that 20% would be the high end which would make them very desirable by all.
