Thread: Where do you get your resources?

I'm still grinding SW (4121) and am starting to wonder how all you MSW's got your resources to grind all the way. Did you mine them yourself? Did you purchase all that steel and LG Ore? or perhaps donations from your guild??

Currently I have 4 med mineralharvesters and 2 med chem harvesters and 2 wind harvesters.

I try not to buy minerals as I (until recently) don't have the credits to purchase the amounts needed. But at the same time, I'm having a hard time producing enough power (wind) and keeping up with steel requirements are just nuts! At this rate it will take weeks if not months to mine my own resources to finish the rest of the boxes.

Any suggestions, tips or hints would be greatly appreciated!!

I spent 7million credits and had guild donations and just barely made it..

I havent been able to make anything since as I have no money but I can still make myself missiles sometimes... Right now I'm stocking up on asteroid resources and trying to find a guildie I can hire as my miner...

switch from wind power to Fusion Power...... more bang for the buck

My first recommendation would be to ditch the Wind Power harvesters and get a Fusion-Ion generator. Radioactive nets much more power per lot, and you're going to need the Radioactive for more than a few schematics anyway.

When I was grinding Shipwright, I had two accounts, and I think I had about 14 lots to dedicate to harvesting, and about 10 of those were just for the Steel.

I think I did buy some materials, but that was because I wanted to get Master as soon as possible, so I probably paid more than I had to.

When harvesting Ore for the grind, try and find the current Fermoinic Siliclasic Ore on your server. With standard Ore, finding a concentration of 60% is a Gold Mine, but its not uncommon for the JTL Ore to hit 80%. I'm on an 85% spot right now.

I've heard some talk that a BER10 Medium Harvester is more efficient (Money / Power) than a BER13 Heavy. I still use heavys, since in the end, a shipwright is going to need more resources before (s)he is going to need more power or money. So I would suggest upgrading those Mediums to Heavies at some point.

I have 8 heavies going all the time. Some mineral, gas, chem depending on the best spawn at the time. During the grind to master shipwright I spent around 10 million credits. I didn't save up resources before jtl hit, so the ones I did buy where anywhere from 3cpu to 30cpu or worse since demand was so high.

Things are great now though, I buy the occasional old spawn resources, but harvest my own for the most part. This allows for me to buy the really nice resources if needed. Now I'm even mining my own space resources when I can get out from behind that crafting station

I had some grind quality resources on hand but they lasted about 10 minutes

I did a lot of mining, opened another account for additional lots, got some from guild mates, and made some deals with folks to provide them with chassis in excahange for resources.

As for power, yeah - switch to fusion ion gens. I have found that the higher the class of radioactive is, the more power each resource unit gives you. (i.e. class 7 radioactive will yield more power than class 2 will). I used to think that a higher oq or pe meant more power, but it seems to be tied to the class. Just an observation, but I could be incorrect (anyone care to confirm this?).

Good luck with your grind!

Higher PE does give a boost to the amount of actual power a unit will put out.

You're half there about higher class radio having higher PE. The reason this occurs is because the higher class the radio is, the higher the min and max cap. For instance, class 7 I believe is 907 and 1000 respectively. Unknown and polymetric can range fully from 1 to 1000. On the other side, class 1 will always range between 500 and 593 PE.

These ranges are coded.

From my observations, higher power (I'm assuming you mean PE) results in fewer units actually taken out of your stack when you feed a harv. Say I have a stack of 10k radio with 1000 PE. If I type /addpower 2000 to my harv, only a fraction of that will actually be subtracted from my stack instead of the full 2000 units. I haven't done the math, but that's what I see happening.

Just like all the others that posted. Heavy is the way to go. Buy as many heavy of each type you need to get the job done.

Oh, I also grinded my SW to a Master Pilot to pay for all the expenditures too. Thats how i paid for all my heavy harvest purchases and maintence. Pilot makes the bucko credits.

I harvested 90% of my own materials with 7 lots. It took me about 3 months to do it though.
As per every body else, ditch the wind power and get fusion generators. You will need radioactives anyway. I usually had 5 hvy minerals running, and 2 fusion. Try looking for the special shipwright resources, even if they have bad stats the spawns last a looooong time, so you have to do a lot less surveying, shifting etc.

I harvested all of my ore, steel, aluminum and iron. I also harvested most of the fiberplast and inert petro chem but did buy a few stacks when I ran low.

I did all three to grind... but I "needed" to move fast, as I wanted to master on Day 1 of JTL being live. I'ddecided to do it towards the end of JTL Beta, which is where I'd learned a deep love of Shipwrighting. I had about 8 heavies going for a week beforehand, about 20-30 more on lots donated by guildies, cranking away, and I Ground TKM in a couple of days to run Janta missions solo for about a week straight to buy the remainder at 1-2 cpu. All told, I had piles and piles of resources in my storage house when i was done, and three crafting tools ready to go. Finshed a couple days early and let the harvies sit on newbie ship resources for a while extra.

So when they turned on JTL a day early, I ran to the store to pick up my reserved copy, came home, and ran though the tree in a little under an hour, sitting by the trainer in Theed. The end result is that I may very well have been the first MSW on Kettemoor(probably certainly the oldest, by now-- a lot of the older SWs on Kett have quit), and the next day when my guilies and most of the server started looking for ships, I had scads of Z-95s and Scyks and things sitting around ready to go(from the excess resources-- I actually didn't have any from the grind, as i used practice mode).

Now, as a MSW... I mostly buy my resources from regular suppliers. Because honestly, I don't like chasing ground resources, it takes too much time and isn't really all that entertaining. I do keep around some BER 13-14s of all needed types, though, so when we get a really outstanding spawn, I can slam harvies down to pick it up.
