What does Reverse Engineering do?
If I loot a really great blaster, what would RE it do?

A nicely written explanantion of RE'ing and yep, you have to be a ShipWright to do it.

Yes, you have to be a shipwright for this.
As RE'ing components stand right now. There is no chance of failure, that I have ever witnessed or have heard about. When you RE an item a bonus of between 1% and 3% will be applied to the item in question.
You have to RE the same type and number of components as the item's RE Level. For example, if the item is a Level 3 RE component, you need to place 3 items of the same type, an example being all shields. When you put in more then one item, all of the stats are added together and averaged out. After averaged out, the 1% to 3% bonus is applied.
This does mean that you could get a lower quality component out of the RE process then the highest quality component in the mix. The best thing would be to gather up multiple components of very similar capabilities with the high numbers and low numbers where you want them.
Hopefully helpful.

Are you sure that it's an average? Everything I have RE'd (admitedly it's low level 1-3 stuff) always takes the best of each stat and puts them to the final product. I have never seen an average in any of my RE'ing.

I might be mistaken. I have been mistaken before.

I realize this is just opening myself up to the "I can't believe you don't know about this" posts, but i only just got JTL about 3 1/2 weeks ago. I'm a 4/4/4/4 rebel pilot now and figure its time I start hunting for some superior parts, which everyone tells me the best are all RE. Just looking for some specific information on how to go about doing this. My take is that I hunt for a ton of looted components and take them to a SW who then pulls differant stats from each part to make 1 really good component? Thanks ahead of time for anyone able to help fill me on the details such as if my take on RE is right, how many parts I need to loot, and/or good places to do so. Thx much ^_^
