Thread: What planet to set up business on???

I just moved to a new server and have a good start on my business but in the process of looking for a planet to call home, I got to wondering if I would make more business on a central world as opposed to a non central world.

I know the galactic vendor search alleviates this problem to some degree but I know that I personally tend to do planet searches first to see if I can get something quick as opposed to heading to the starport then to wherever planet the waypoint is on.

Do you think many other people are like this thereby making sales on core populated planets higher in volume than on a mid level planet like Dant or an less populated planet like Lok or Talus or Rori?

I think human nature once again plays into one theme: Travel the path of least resistance. By that I mean that most people will look for bargains, but alot of people don't mind paying a premium if the location of the vendor is close to where they are searching from. Especially if the items don't widely vary in quality.

So that being said, it falls on what cities tend to be the most popular. Coronet still tends to be the hub of trade, but less so for some servers. Regardless, it's still a safe bet to have a vendor just outside Cnet in order to succeed in your crafting business.

Ease of access definately helps. I'm set up in a player city on Naboo about 20m away from our shuttleport, so it's pretty simple for people to get to me. If you can't get close to a player city shuttleport, I'd definately try to stay close to a major starport.

Given the advents of ship travel and the galactic vendor search, does it really make a difference?

Even with those two factors, I still find myself doing only a planet vendor search and trying to find something there first before moving to a galaxy wide search. I was just wondering if anyone else thought this was common and wether it impacted their sales. I was hoping some big time merchants with multiple planet locations would chime in.

Thanks for all the input so far though, folks.

I would recommed as close to Coronet South as you can get. I find that I not only never do galaxy search but I usually go the the closest location. Yeah, I am lazy. I had a Vendor in my player city next to the shuttle and one 800m South of Cnet. The Cnet vendor does 10 to 20 times the business. You see, the city is 2500m from Cnet and I don't think the bazar tells you if the vendor is in a city or not. It also does not say if there is a shuttle or not.

This is the biggest problem with the GVS system. All the customer sees is meters from their location, regardless of distance to a PC controlled city shuttleport. Yes, if the customer wanted to take the time to grab the waypoint, activate it, look at the planet map to see what city it's near, and go figure out if the city has a shuttleport or not, they could do that. But again, that's a whole lot of steps for a customer base who is generally interested in instant gratification.

Yes, a large number of people are not using the Bazaar and the vendor search (we as vendors are aware of this tool, but many others aren't). Location matters more than anything else, even for the people that do use the Bazaar (close to a starport or a shuttle port). Almost as important is being on the global map and using barkers at the starports (droids are better than nothing). Vendors are like websites, unless people know about them they just aren't going to get used (they're not the advertisement, they're the destination).

The other thing I found is that what you are selling matters too. Stay out of area saturated with your product lines (tends to drive prices down too far) and what sells good on one planet may not move at all on another one (you'll have to experiement in your situation). For instance Bestine usually has a large Imperial faction population and selling mid-level TIE Fighters should go better there, unless your servewr has a large population of ship vendors in the area (and the prices are too competative).

Multi-Player is what brings the SWG world alive (real people, other players, make SWG so wonderfully dynamic). I just don't treat SWG like it was a chat room, I don't play to socialize and I resent forced grouping!"

I usually do a local search first, to see if what I am looking for is in the nearby area (usually by one of the Main Landing Starports). IF Something's within 1,000-2,000m, and I think the price is decent, then Off I'll go. A lot of times though, either something is not in the area, or more often, when it is, someones' got some asinine price listed. It was a great relief when they finally put the search option in!

IF what I'm looking for isn't in the initial check, or the prices are absurd, then I just enter the name in the filter and look either planet wide or totally galaxy wide, and go from there. Between the distance and area listings, 90% of the time it's easy to figure out where a vendor will be, and how far from whatever starport, Etc.

IF you can get a spot close to a main city/starport, then all the better off you'll be. If not, then you'll just want to make sure to find a place near a shuttle port, next best thing.

The best spots are always near a starport. I loath using shuttles. I have deleted vendor waypoints if they are too far from a starport. I am quite busy in game and I haven't the time for shuttle trips or long drives. I have three vendor locations myselfand not one is more than 1200 meters from a starport.

I now use the GVS for everything. When someone asks me in game "where can I find..." I always reply "Galatic Vendor Search". I have not used the panetary map vendorlisting since the GVS came out. I think that I have spent MORE money since GVS went live since I no longer have to spend hours searching for what I want. Last night I bought my Alt two scythe's and it took me all of five minutes to find them in GVS,fly to Naboo, travel to the vendor andpurchase the weapons (only 100K each and brand new... what a deal).

Set up near a starport and turn on GVS. Then sit back and watch the money roll in.
