Thread: /targetNearestAsteroidChunk

I have not seen this posted, so I thought I'd share my little trick. I set up a macro that contains "/target ast" and bound it to a joystick button. This targets the nearest asteroid chunk floating around. Makes it easier to find the chunks you missed when the medium sized chunk blew apart, and it'll reduce the mess floating around the system. I just keep targetting the nearest until the nearest is too far away (usually someone else's missed chunk) and go back to the main asteroid.

Nice, what about adding

/follow

gets you after that chunk as well.

Very good idea. I will do this tonight. If you can /follow an asteroid chunk, that will make mining incredibly easy... Almost too easy...

I guess you could loop the macro too, but then you'd have to /dump to abort chasing those chunks someone else let float away, or when those pesky pirates come after you. Though I just ignore the tier-1 pirates, they just swarm around you like mosquitos and can't do enough damage to bother with.

It's a good idea - but the problem with those pirates is they are all called Asteroid Bandit and so will trigger the macro.

What I have found incredibly useful is the radar - Asteroid chunks show up as green dots and so are fairly easy to look for just make sure to set the radar fairly close (1 or 2km) so it doesn't get too clustered.

I also have a policy that as soon as the next chunk is further than the source asteroid I leave it to float off.

By the way - I'm not sure if DP put spawn timers in yet - if not for a laugh fly out to the corner of the zone (ie. 8000 8000 8000). If he hasn't there will be a pile of asteroid chunks sitting there spinning in and out of each other - it looks really wierd (and no - you can't mine them as they are invincible once they hit any edge of zone)

Good point. I'll try "/target Asteroid Chunk" tonight to see if that ignores the pirates. Or maybe someone who is not at work can try it and let us know...

I guess I did not have any pirates spawn when I started using my macro. That, or I just blew them up...

Great tip Goraf, I keep forgetting about the /target [targetname] thing. I just started using it more recently to help locate NPC trainers and quest givers in crowded areas.

Just for the record, asteroids chunks are considered NPC ships, so the 'target nearest NPC ship' key also works. I use that during escort missions, so it was conveniently already mapped for helping hunt asteroids. I like the /follow suggestion as well, however. Might give that a shot too.

I played with this a bit more last night. Using "/target Asteroid Chunk" still targets Asteroid Bandits, so just blew them up instead of ignoring them. Using /follow works, but I found you usually can't hit it until you get really close because it is moving in a different direction. I am sticking to "/target ast" for now, but I might just switch to "targetNearestNPCShip".
